"You ask how much of it was me," he whispers. "Some. Enough."

DEAR MARE, STOP PICKING THE WRONG BROTHER.
***Warning, spoilers abound, do not continue with this review unless you have read the book.****
First of all, I CALLED IT. I KNEW that we'd be getting lots of Maven and seeing the boy behind the villain's mask in this one. And PRAISE THE BOOK GODS, I'm so glad Victoria didn't let me down. She gave us all those moments we hoped for, the explanation, the moments of fragility, the tension, everything... She gave me a beautiful, tragic, tormented villain who fell in love with the wrong girl.

....I say wrong because Mare does not deserve thisDarkling, this twisted Warner of a king. Her reaction to his kiss, during the vulnerable tenuous moment between the two was what finally convinced me to give up on their love story (whereas in Shatter Me you could pick up on something in Warner & Juliette's kiss, here there's nothing. It's gone, alright, I get the message. Mare feels nothing but disgust, it's a "violation of the worst kind" -she's in control and she'll never pick the villain). While I have never felt the spark between Mare and Cal (yup, even in this book including that scene), she's never going to be Maven's. That's fine, I'll take him. Mare doesn't deserve him, even though Maven is more like her than Cal will ever be.

This is a boy who was crippled from birth by an evil woman so terrible he doesn't know what thoughts are his. I just want him to have a happily ever after. But there is none. This boy is darkness incarnate and I have a feeling he's going to end up doing something noble to save Cal or Mare or his people in the next (final) book (to redeem himself the only way a villain can) and I just can't cope.

The first book is still my favorite, but King's Cage gave me so many beautiful twisted lines. Victoria is a master of powerful prose, and she delivered some exceptional ones --as you might expect, my favorite ones were his.
"Love makes you weak. And she's right. I learned that before I even knew you."
"I'm not a fool, little lightning girl. If you're going to play in my head, I'm going to play in yours. It's what we're good at."
.... I could try to write a review of this entire book, but let's be honest, I read it for Maven and I don't have the heart to write everything up because I'm in mourning for a ship that will never sail.

(yes, I realize Maven does not have blonde hair but this gif fits perfectly)

hehe, thank you, I knew you'd appreciate that one!

@ Hope, heheh:)
@ Scorpio-of-Autumn, thank you!!! I had fun writing that, we'll see where this series go, watch and it will be nothing like what I said:D
@Alice, we allllll love us some Aaron Warner <3

It really depends on what you like. It's very similar in feel to Mockingjay and X-Men and Game of Thrones (and a lot of people say it's like Red Rising) so if you are okay with books that kind of have been done before (I love it, I'm just saying this because a lot of my reviewer friends didn't like it because they didn't consider it original so I want to prepare you). It has all my favorite tropes... but again, not everyone will like this one. I would rec it whole heartedly if you don't mind reading stuff similar to what's out with new twists, but again some people are really bothered by that:)

Seems like we are both off GR a lot lately, I miss our chats so much but I feel you work/life eghhh, we can't be superhuman, got to cut back, GR sucks us into a book spiral, you just know I couldn't resist with this one! I can't wait for your reaction to the end though, it was my favorite type of ending for an in-between book:D I liked RQ way more but GS was still good, I honestly think I'll enjoy the 3rd one more, you'll know why when you finish!

No problem! I know this one was a love or hate for everyone like another of my favorites (Shatter Me) so I try to be:D I don't want to set people up for false expectations, might not like all same books as me but no point saying read something I don't think they'll enjoy as much:D

That ending was KILLER. Talk about wanting book three NOW!!!

aw, I'm sorry:/ I actually loved that switch for SM -but I know a lot of ppl were upset on that and the whole Chaol thing. I did love Adam but Warner's character fascinated me so I guess I was okay with the shift:D Honestly, my prediction on this could be dead wrong... b2 did not hint at a love triangle at all, that is my wishful hoping <3
Tiffany wrote: "I saw a trailer for the first book!"
It's so good!!!
Roxanne wrote: "I am so glad I am not the only Maven fan!! And I am now terrified of reading Earths End..."
I'm excited for it -Elise gave me a signed copy with Aldrik's pic drawn inside so I'm ready to read it now (sadly real life gets in way of my reading right now) >> at least with her you don't have to wait a long time!

Def team Cal ALL THE WAY!!!!!
Why Rachel!!!!! WHY!!!

EE was brutal. Be warned

Def team Cal ALL THE WAY!!!!!
Why Rachel!!!!! WHY!!!"
Because I... I can't explain it. I just have this feeling V wants us to think he's evil so she can go HAHAH PLOT TWIST. And Cal, while a great person (Except for scamming on lil bro's girl in b1, I hated him for that until he stood up to Mare right when she tried to trick him, then I liked him), I just never felt chemistry in either book for. So while he's a great guy, I don't like him for Mare. And i have a feeling Mare is going to go all Darth Vader or redeem Maven, one of the two by series end >> latter theory because I know V loves Star Wars and if I was in charge of this series I would so do that because most wouldn't see either coming. EE>> I know!!! I have to read it still! Elise drew a pic of Aldrik in mine just for me, one of my most precious possessions, I think I have to buy the ebook because I don't want to damage my paperback version
@ Emily, Ariane, Lorna:
The sane part of the world is totally #TEAMCAL (hence I don't blame you):) I embrace the crazy haha!
@ Muna, release date HA I want the release day HERE NOW!!!
@Jasmine, RIGHT??? *cheers*

YAAAAS!!! Priscila <3 PS I just wrote a scene in B4 with your namesake, she is becoming one of my favorites HAHAHA!

Watch and there will be a new love interest in the next book hahah, they both don't seem like they are going to be with Mare right now for me, but I'm still thinking she might somehow explain most of Maven's actions >> not enough to redeem him, but kind of like how Tahereh did Warner..... I just really, REALLY want another Warner:P
Brooke wrote: "NO!!! I Love that he's the hard core bad guy!! Am totally team Cal. Really want a bit from his & how everyone deals w/ while She's gone!! But it would be cool to have a bit from both boys : )"
the sane half of the world is #teamCal :) I agree, having romance with both, I won't complain!

someone posted an interview on my review of B2 saying Victoria doesn't support Mare-Maven, given that my heart is now broken and lol I wouldn't doubt that for a second, ha!
