it was amazing
bookshelves: king-me, book-club, january-2019, movie

Wow! That ending was a real gut punch. Stephen King usually doesn't do that but......

Holy Shit!

Cujo was written while Stephen King was in the depths of his alcoholism. Uncle Stevie doesn't even remember writing it and if you think about it he didn't write it his alcoholism did. Like Cujo, alcoholism is rabid dog that will stop at nothing in its mission to kill you. Like Cujo alcoholism is unrelenting and scary. Cujo is written almost stream of conscious there are no chapters.

I didn't expect to feel bad for Cujo but I did. He wasn't evil he was just sick. Through no fault of his own he got bit and contracted rabies. He was suffering and in pain. That proves Stephen King is an amazing writer because I don't even like dogs.

Cujo is a classic! A must read!

Cassie Fischer Are you working your way through his classics?

Erin Yes I am Cassie and its a lot of fun!

Chris Berko "Like Cujo, alcoholism is rabid dog that will stop at nothing in its mission to kill you." this might be the single greatest line I have ever read in any review ever! I'm a substance abuse counselor, in recovery myself, and that about sums it up. I tell my clients it is like the Terminator, no pity, no remorse, and it won't stop until you are dead. With your permission, i would like to steal parts of this review to use in the groups I facilitate. I read Cujo as a teenager in the 1990s and did not know he wrote this while struggling, thanks for the info and your spot on comparison. Damn that's good.

Blair I don't know if you saw the movie, but they decided to change that ending. Not palatable for your average movie goer I guess

Thats quite the compliment Chris! You dont need my permission but of course you have it.

Haven't watched the movie but I hate when they change the ending in the movie.

TMR Good review.

Athelstan That is a very perceptive review on your part! Equating Cujo to alcoholism is something I've not considered, nor would, I don't think. The addicted brain has only one desire and that is to stop the pain you are trying to drown or smoke away or whatever. I really liked how King put us in Cujo's head and we could feel him trying to stop his pain by killing whatever he percieved as the source of it. Not that he was a bad dog, he was suffereing and didn't understand that.
But you are right. Well played! Well played, indeed.
