I do not know how to feel about this book.
Read it again recently and I still don't know how to feel about it.
I like that the mother is such a strong character. She's trying to raise her child in a less than ideal environment and trying to escape such a horrible situation. Jack is a bit inconsistent. One moment he's super smart and knows big words, the next, he talks in a childish syntax and puzzles over simple statements he has to have heard before from his mother. I think the writer should have either made Jack a bit of a genius or a child that doesn't understand basic sayings and phrases instead of going back and forth between extremes.
It made things rather unbelievable for me. At least in terms of Jack being a narrator and having to filter what's going on through his child mind.

So I read this book again and I gave it a star. Mainly because the mother is so AWESOME in this book. She has to be one of the best book mothers I've read. The amount of patience she has with Jack is amazing. She doesn't beat him or yell at him. She treats him with respect and kindness. She doesn't put the blame on him. She does all she can to protect him from harm. I do hope the movie is good and takes the best parts of the books and smooths out the worse parts of it.

The mixed feelings continue but it is still good

"I swear this woman is one of the best book mothers. She's so endlessly patient with her child. She never hits him or blames him. She's just an awesome character. I kind of want a book in her perspective. Sometimes the writer is a bit inconsistent when it comes to what Jack knows and doesn't know. Showing and not telling would work better. She makes him conveniently precocious."

"ugh. no one should care if a boy likes Dora better than Spider-Man and pink better than blue. GUH. I hate this gender nonsense."

Most people seem to love or loathe this book, but I'm like you: the implausible inconsistency of Jack's voice was infuriating, but I did like the fact it distanced the reader from the true horror.
