did not like it
bookshelves: dnf, ya, dystopias-post-apocalyptic, fantasy

Abandoned at about page 90.

Reasons: general disinterest in the story, the fantasy world and the characters' fates; unappealing writing style; strong suspicions that Finn is the "dead" prince; painful flashbacks of The Maze Runner, Matrix, Robocop and some apocalyptic B-grade movies whose names I can't recall.

Lessons learned: science fantasy might not be my cup of tea.

Penny I can't wait to know what you think of this. I liked it but I know a lot of people didn't care for it at all. It's definitely different but I found it refreshing compared to a lot of what's being published these days, ya know?

Spider the Doof Warrior I liked this book. Finally, a cool cover/cool book.

Wicked Incognito Now I can't wait to see what you think also. I have the book on my shelf and have been meaning to read it for awhile.

Tatiana I do hope it works for me. The reviews have been mixed.

Yah. That's exactly what I've been thinking. I could read the book right now, but I'm still hesitating. (Actually I started reading it, then gave up. Started again, gave up again..)

I like this one, too, but my guess is that you won't, Tatiana.

Tatiana That doesn't sound very promising, Ariel and Joe. I will give it a couple more hours and then see if I care to continue or not.

That doesn't sound very promising, either. I've also heard mixed reviews, and am curious what you will have to say about it.

Crystal Oh yea! I am excited to read what you think!

i knew it. i am patting myself on the back.

Tatiana LOL. How do you know me so well?:)

I know that there is a lot that I myself am often willing to overlook that you never would.

message 13: by jesse (new)

jesse I guess I can safely scratch it off my to-read list. Whew. No regrets. Though I may try it out (months/years) later. For now I count myself content. Go figure!

Tatiana I read all the spoilers I could find, so I can say the concept is interesting. But if I can't bear the writing, it's hard to enjoy the idea.

IDK about you Joe, but if I constantly pick up and put down a book, I never end up enjoying it.

Zosia, I had Robocop flashbacks when I was reading about half-men/half-machine creatures in this novel.

Ariel, are you planning to read Sapphique?

Yup. I have this problem, though, where the longer it takes me to get to a sequel, the less I care about picking it up. That's why I have yet to crack open Mockingjay. It's not fair to the series but if these are the conditions I subject even the Hunger Games to, how can Incarceron really survive?

Tatiana It is in fact much more fun to read sequels just when they come out, along with all crazy, overemotional fans:)

And I can't believe you still haven't read Mockingjay!

I'm reading Let the Right One In, though, and absolutely loving it, to the point where I no longer even want to see the English movie because I fear they will ruin it. (That was my initial impetus to pick it up.)

Kelli I had such a hard time visualizing this one. I had really high hopes but I had to slog through to the end.

Tatiana I really loved Let the Right One In. I've seen the Swedish movie version of it and didn't care too much for it. I suspect the American won't be much better. It's a hard book to adapt to screen.

Penny I suspected you might not like it, but I wasn't entirely sure. Though I've noticed you don't tend to care for sci-fi and/or fantasy unless it's really epic, like Daughter of the Forest or the Hunger Games.

Tatiana I actually do like sci-fi, something just didn't quite work for me in this book. As for fantasy, I think I prefer "girly" fantasy:)

Spider the Doof Warrior I dug the juxtaposition between glossy technology and characters living in the past. I thought that part was cool
Haven't read Let the Right One In, but I really liked the movie. The book might scare me and I'm a wimp.

Crystal Sorry you didn't like it. I liked how you compared it to Robocop LOL!

Tatiana LOL, Crystal. I used to love that movie when I was younger. It was vair popular in my part of the world:)

Spider the Doof Warrior Never even thought of Robocop. The whole sun block 3000 part is very funny.

Annalisa It took me a long time to get into this one, but about midway through it picked up and I ended up liking it. Not that I think you should read it. If the beginning bugs you that much, the ending isn't going to be that much of a reward for you.

message 27: by Scribble (new)

Scribble Orca The YA Group message flagged this book as November's read. The blurb was dismaying. It reads very much like the film Dark City, not to mention Tatiana's other comparisons. Fingers crossed.

message 28: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Terrington It's worse than most top quality sci-fi fantasy just so you know.
