Minister John Ames' insistence on leading a virtuous life becomes a pain in the neck. His personal and circular logic goes nowhere, and his daily ministrations, well, you really couldn't give less a care about. And this is truly awful folks. These are very deep thoughts from father to son, directly from the death bed. & our main thought through this all becomes: Wow, the dude's taking his awful sweet-ass time to die!

You forgot to mention that he is insincere and creepy and incredibly self-righteous and completely full of himself - and his conviction that nothing but his worldview has any right to exist. He won't like my take on him, but I am sure he will condescend to forgive me.
God, I hear you. What a haul. Pulitzer winner??!!
For starters, John Ames is not on his death bed, although he has a failing heart. He is still preaching every Sunday and writing his sermons. His best friend, another minister is the one who is frailer. The next book, Home, goes more into the friend's life and final days.
So it wasn't just me? Whew!
I started it and immediately hated it. I’m in your boat on this one!
