While I truly loved this series once upon a time and still have a soft spot for it, I also want to acknowledge that the love story at its centre is inherently toxic and gets even worse in the later books. Meyer also stands accused of exploiting Quileute culture, and moreover I'm annoyed about the author's racism, which showed when she blocked the director of the first film from casting anyone who wasn't white for the Cullens. So you know, there's all that.

Javi Who doesn't like a love story, right? :) I saw the movie though and nearly lost the will to live. Maybe the books are more engaging?

message 2: by Kai (new) - added it

Kai Spellmeier The movies really shame the books. (I still enjoy them though) I think that's where the bad reputation comes from really

Elissa I really enjoyed the first book when I read it. I thought the second was ok and the last two annoyed me. I think the movies really did hurt my views, though. Well, Bella drove me insane, tbh.

I liked all of the books a lot. I still can't say which one I like best. There's pro's and con's for all of them.

Toby I keep thinking of reading these, but then the mixed reviews always scare me away... But I think I might just have to give them a try

Man you fell for the writing but gave up anyway? You gotta pick up that book again real quick.

Vishakha ~ ReadingSpren ~ I especially like the imagery Meyer's writing creates in this book. The forests near Forks are among the most beautiful forests in the world and she really captures their eerie, haunting beauty in Twilight.

Josh Hyung (조슈아) I'm not ashamed to say that the Twilight saga was what got me into YA. I read Twilight, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn three times! I read New moon only once because Bella was...you know. Haha. Exceptional review, Kai! Thanks for rekindling my feels. :)

Jasmine I reread the series several times when I was in high school and a die-hard twi-hard. I'm really eager to read some of my favorite parts again to see if it still affects me the same way it did back then!

jax I have reread this series so many times and I never get tired of it!

Brianna I have never read "Twilight", but I like that you like it, because most people compare it to Harry Potter, and they are two different things. Thank you for that.

I think what they're comparing is the hype around it. Twilight was the most hyped fantasy franchise for a few years.

Melinda I loved the Twilight books, I think they got better with each book....now the movies, they were ok, I actually just binge watched them about a month ago on Amazon Prime.....they could've been done a little bit better, but to each his own right?

message 21: by MaryGrace (new)

MaryGrace You know, I always think about this. I have a hard time with Bella, and this is not quite my cup of tea when it comes to romance anymore, but when people talk about bad books, this isn't on my list by a long shot. It's at least atmospheric and still re-readable. And the younger generations won't know the joy middle school me felt reading my first YA book.

They definitely got better, but I still can't decide on a favourite.
And the films are actually pretty bad. I like them, but they are definitely not good.

Atmospheric describes it pretty well, I think!

I think it's because the films suck so bad. I feel like it had a major influence on some of these ratings.

message 27: by Mary (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mary I think it's just a case of bandwagon hate.
In my opinion, both the books and the films were good!

That makes sense as well.
Well to be honest, I love Kristen Stewart as Bella, no matter what other people say. But then again, I think it is exaggerated and melodramatic (which the books suggests, too) and often cheaply done. I like them, but I don't think they're very good.

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

I absolutely love the books!! (I'm not so much a big fan of eclipse because there's not enough Edward time) I've read the series quite a few times but can never quite read the 4 in 4 days, it always takes me 5!! The movies are hilariously bad- you have to watch them with the knowledge of that otherwise you can't enjoy them: you will try and critique everything instead of just laughing your head off at it all

Whoa, 4 books in 5 days is impressive. I don't think I could ever pull it off. And what you say about the films is true, otherwise it might also ruin the books for you.

Enja I was just thinking about rereading them for the first time since 2009... Now I´ve read your comment it´s definitely going to happen this autumn (with a hot chocolate to a cup of tea because I´m in England)!

Kathi I agree. All the people saying „Still a better love story than Twilight.. i think it was very romantic 😌Also, I loved how Edward’s family and their backgrounds are important (especially in the last book). You normally don’t have that in YA. Have you read „The short second life of Bree Tanner as well?

oh god, so sorry, I just saw this now!

I also think it was super romantic! Yeah the watching you sleep at night thing is...creepy at best...but, idk, I still loved it.
And yes I have! I wish there had been more side stories like hers.

Jennie Damron It's nice to see Twilight getting some love. I enjoyed this series and am thinking about rereading it soon. :)

I've been wanting to do that for ages. But I think I'll just reread 3&4 because I've already read 1&2 a few times.

Einav So true - this story is soooooo romantic

Kai Spellmeier Eliza wrote: "I really like your profile and opinions, but in your bio you said you’re a feminist...AND U LIKE TWILIGHT?"

so...a girl following her dreams and making them happen is not feminist? Just because what she dreams of is staying with the one forever and becoming a vampire?

Monica I loved this entire series! It's probably the only "romance" novels I have ever really connected with. And even though the movies are not great, I have still re-watched as a guilty pleasure...

message 42: by Eliza (new)

Eliza Adler @Kai, well, you make a point, and I would like to make it clear that I have NO INTENTION of starting an argument (whoops), but my understanding is that Bella Swan is not nearly as independent as many other female protagonists in the YA genre, and I honestly have a problem shipping somebody whose age is in the triple digits with a young adult

no fair enough, I totally agree. I'm rereading Eclipse at the moment and whoa the emotional abuse Bella receives from Edward. Boy bye. But I generally think that Bella is a very underrated character.

Eliza Adler @Kai, oh

ShelfIndulgence I respect your views, but Edward and Bella's relationship came across as toxic rather than romantic. Think about it. Bella has no other interests/ambitions/dreams/interesting thoughts. It's just Edward this and Edward that. Edward himself is creepy and stalker-like. If a guy watched me sleep every night, I'd go straight to the police and file a dozen complaints. Yet, Bella, being a doormat, thinks this perverse behavior is loving and protective. This sends the wrong message to teenage girls. And Bella contemplates suicide for months after Edward leaves her. I mean, we all come to a point where we have to let go and move on. It isn't okay to completely obsess over a person to the extent that you just cannot respect his/her wish to part ways. Yeah, I got a bit lyrical there, but still. And Edward is deadly and dangerous, yet his volatileness is glamorized. Bella thinks the way he drinks blood and does a whole bunch of gory stuff is attractive. See, again, this sends a very very bad message to teens.

I wholeheartedly agree! It's been a while since I wrote this review and even then I was aware that something was iffy about this relationship. As much as I loved reading these books (and I still do sometimes) the older I get, the more issues I have with these books. It is a super toxic relationship.

message 50: by Blue (new) - rated it 3 stars

Blue I agree. The more times I re-read these the more I am like "Edward is super creepy. Jacob is super creepy. Mike is super creepy....why did I love these books?" But I like Jasper, Alice and Rosalie. I like their back stories, I like how they ended up where they are. Breaking Dawn annoyed me a bit but Alice suffered in a psych ward, yet comes out of it with a sunny attitude. Jasper joined the war effort and was enthralled to a woman he thought he loved. Rosalie was raped by a man she thought loved her, and was turned into a vampire against her will, but was able to take revenge calmly without spilling any blood.

It has its moments of awesomeness and it has its moments of WTF?!
