I loved Pattern Recognition nearly as much as Neuromancer and felt the two novels had a lot of similarities. Even though it is classified as general fiction, the novel has a strong SF feel to it. The highly technological societies (New York and the "mirror world" of London) where things are similar but a little different and the efficient, individualistic, widely traveled and rootless characters make Pattern Recognition feel dark and surreal and more like SF.
Boone Chu was an interesting character and I was disappointed he was not developed further; same with Bigend. These are very minor flaws that don't take away from this excellent book.

Given how much I loved Neuromancer, this looks like it might be my next Gibson read.

It took me a few tries, but I ended up loving Neuromancer too. One of these days I'll have to read it again so I can write a review.
I had the same experience with Neuromancer. It was my third try that did it for me and now it is a favorite.
Is Boone Chu an east asian character? Or is it one of those futures where ethnicity is all a bit blurry and no one minds? I'm just quite interested cos caucasian characters are just spread all over the place, and I wanna see a different protagonist sometimes :)
It's been quite a while since I read the book, but I don't remember any details about Boone's ethnicity.
To answer a previous question, Boone is American, from Tulsa, though Cayce often makes comments (to herself) about him being "Chinese American.". He also knows his way around Japan and has an ex girlfriend there, so presumably has spent a lot of time there. I'm about 1/3 of the way through the book, so there may be a lot more to him.
