it was ok
bookshelves: novels, autobiographical-novels

I was going to write up a Celebrity Death Match between Sapphire and Dave Pelzer for the title of Most Abused Child Ever, but on second thoughts, silence is golden.

One last thing. I remember reading Push and watching The Wire during the same week had a strange effect on me which for a white English male was not a good thing. A work colleague asked me if Push was any good and I barked at him bitch be messin my mind and shit .

Paul Bryant Actually this one was Jessica's fault I think. I have Hatchet Jobs, will have to refer back. The problem of first person narrative you mention (i.e. credibility) is one I mention in my notes towards a review of The Poisonwood Bible. It's been with us since the beginning of the novel - all those letters in Pamela, for instance. But hey there Mrs Plot-Give-Away, you gave away the plot!

Paul Bryant Uh oh, did this Sapphire person turn out to be a great American fruitcake?

Jessica I do NOT believe this is the same Sapphire. This must be a different person!

Charissa This is a great book Paul. And no, the character in PUSH gratefully does not in any way encounter Astral Projections. Oy. You'll have to let me know what you think when you're done. This book really moved me.

Jennifer (formerly Eccentric Muse) Hi, Charissa ... is it a great novel, or is it a book-hoping-to-be-read-like-a-screenplay-so-a-movie-funded-by-Oprah-what a bonus!-will-get-made? I sincerely want to know, coz it smells like the latter to me, and I don't want to waste my time on a novel that can't stand on its own as a novel, if seeing the movie will do.

Paul, your comment "not so much a novel as a piece of agit-prop or an issue movie" also suggests the latter.

Paul Bryant It's the latter.

Paul Bryant I think it was a case of over-egging the pudding.

Ro " A work colleague asked me if Push was any good and I barked at him bitch be messin my mind and shit ."

You're hilarious....LOL

Michelle this comment has no bearing on the quality or content of the book, but I have to say I'm a little freaked out by your comment since I was also watching the wire while reading this book...
