They should put a photo of this book in the dictionary beside the definition of epic because epic it is. Covering the history of hawaii and even the prehistory, Michener covers every aspect of what shaped the tropical islands from volcanoes to war to the myriad people who lived there. Michener humanizes his history by telling the stories of individuals and their families, their ambitions, and their reactions to the changing world. While it is a very long book, I would highly recommend it. Think of it as a series and dive in!

Licha I've always wanted to read this but have felt...intimidated(?) by it. You review has made me decide to add this to my list.

Pamela It is intimidating, but a good read. Many of the characters are based on real people. His research is meticulous and his writing is very good. It was a great read for summer--sow thing I could dive into for a long time!

Licha Thanks, Pamela. I'm going to see if I can buy it. I think I need to delve into some meaty books. I haven't done that in a good while. I always see Michener's books and they all look like they would be really good, but for some reason, this one always calls to me.

Margitte I have read most of Michener's books, long before joining GR, and agree with your lovely thoughts on this book, Pamela. He was a remarkable historical fiction author. Outstanding. His research was always so meticulously done. Just excellent. I am of the opinion that he was one of the best authors, ever, in this genre.

Pamela I agree. I actually just started Chesapeake.
