'tis the season...

13 TALES OF TERROR: BOOK 2

read during my Social Work Years

I Remember: a young lad's journey into the dark side... abuse & degradation, times a million... droolingly graphic depictions of rape, pederasty, blood, piss, shit, the whole kit & kaboodle... bikers & whores & drug addicts, oh my!... is that some form of Stockholm Syndrome or is this the kid's true destiny?... everything is so fuckin ugly... i feel sick... i suppose Delany had his reasons.

i later gave this to a colleague who loves Delany. he enjoyed the book a lot. he called it "tender" - at least near the end of the novel. apparently it was tender enough to bring a few tears to his eyes. huh. maybe i have a heart of steel. or a low threshold for such things.

ours is not to wonder why...

mark monday a fascinating description. but all at once, or alternately poppers, then steroids, then heroin? personally i think you missed the PCP that is clearly this novel's greatest influence!

mark monday mental fucks are reserved for my New Dimensions shelf!

message 3: by Jason (new)

Jason You'd also think his 'queertime' shelf would be jolly good fun, too, wouldn't you?

i built it as a lure! come on in, the water's fine!

mark monday looking at this comment thread, i realize that my comment (and Jason's) makes no sense with Bird Brian's comment removed. sigh. i wonder how many other threads are now rendered nonsensical. BB, when you left GR you destroyed the fragile make-up of my entire GR existence! sorta.

message 6: by AC (new)

AC What happened to Brian (if you don't mind my asking)? I thought I had just seen him 'rouned the quad', as it were...

mark monday oh he came back, whew! although on a more limited basis. unfortunately when he left, his comments left with him. i think those comments are gone forevermore, dust in the wind...

Sketchbook Know wot? Nobody misses anyone. "I shall take my plunder and leave GR." Ok, Bye !

I wonder how many actually make more sense since he's taken his ball and gone home.

I know, eh? Why he had to delete in a way that took everything with him, heaven alone knows, but never mind, that's water under the bridge now.

As to Hogg, I agree, even though I couldn't even make it to the half-way mark.... :P

mark monday yeah, I never understand why people do that. the nuclear option. it almost feels like they are taking their anger at GR and other things out on the people who have actually had great conversations with them. by removing their comments they are, in a way, fucking with my own experiences, the memory of interesting or positive interactions we've had together. it feels spiteful and small. BUT, all that said, I know that the people who have done that (Brian, Elizabeth, maybe others) do not actually feel that way and that they were coming from an emotional place when they nuked their comments along with their reviews - I know that they are not actually being spiteful and small to me, personally, that I had nothing to do with the choice they made. so I don't hold it against them in the end, of course.

still doesn't feel good though.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* I haven't gone the nuclear option (yet) but I seriously considered it.

To be honest, the problem is that GR doesn't give the option to pick and choose. Its either all or nothing and there are comments in groups I wouldn't want floating around if I were not around to see where the group is going (mew members, etc).

I don't think most people even thought about the effect on book conversation threads.

message 15: by mark (new) - rated it 1 star

mark monday definitely agree with that last sentence. which is why I don't hold it against anyone, despite my poor wittle feelings!

Traveller Hmm, but BB in particular had so many discussions going. He'd just started a new book group himself, and he must have known that his comments on it would dissolve when he hit the 'delete comments' button.

But hey, I really enjoyed BB's reviews although I'm a bit more circumspect this time around.
I suppose he had his own good reasons and i know its not for me to judge.

This is actually a weird set-up. Though we view our comments as our own, we shouldn't forget that other people invest time and trouble and perhaps even to some extent emotionally in conversations that they had with us, and deleting your part of such conversations, seems to me, to dismiss the fact that these were two-way conversations, and that removing half of the conversation is actually pretty rude to the other person.

Since BB liked to review politics and history, which generated a lot of debate, which some people might even have bookmarked for later reference, deleting the reviews not only represents a loss in terms of the fact that one cannot refer back to the review itself anymore, but also the fact that entire discussions were deleted in the comment threads along with the reviews.
