UPDATE APRIL 12TH ADDING PARENTAL GUIDANCE AND SAFETY WARNINGS because kirkus reviews, some GR librarians and most booktubers won't tell you the truth. This is a New adult book not as close to erotica as ACOMAF but still. I'm also changing my original 5 rating to a 3.5 rating
PARENTAL GUIDANCE
SEX/NUDITY 8 out 10 (view spoiler)
VIOLENCE/GORE 7 out of 10 (view spoiler)
PROFANITY 5/10 (view spoiler)
SUBSTANCE USE 6/10 as every single character in this book is 19 or older or a milleneal ancient fae alcohol consumption is present. Mostly at meals and during a ceremony called Calanmai
SAFETY WARNINGS
(view spoiler)
In book 2 (view spoiler)
So my original rating changes to 3.5 I can't rate lower in spite of the safety issues because book 2 is one of my all time favourites.
Original review
This has been an excellent year for me in books. This retelling of Beauty and the beast left me wanting more but it was totaly a worthy reading.
Sara J.Maas gets better with each book she writes I honestly like her style and her vivid imagination.
What I liked the most about this book was the romance. I wasn't expecting it'd be so well developed but I wantmore and even more.
I like this book better than red queen.

Is it so terrible to let teenagers read about sex?
My parents never censored what books I had access to and after the age of 13 (when she goes into year 7/ high school) I won't have an opinion on what my daughter reads.
Anyway I know you aren't explicitly saying teenagers shouldn't read this but it seems implied by your rating drop and warning.

You would be better reading it for yourself if you are otherwise interested and making up your own mind.

I didn't mean his personality switches, I meant that the romance and focus on romance goes from one heroe to the other. And yes the "attack" (biting her neck) on Feyre and the whole "It's your fault because you left your room" was douche, but still he was supposed to be this kind of noble high lord others followed wilingly and with loyalty. He endured Amarantha's tricks for the sake of his court and because Feyre so yes he wasn't perfect and his sending Feyre home was stupid, but he wasn't a total jerk like in book 2 Where the tithe thing came? no hints on that, it was just SJM manipulating her characters. She's a talented writer but she's way below from JK Rowling, Stephanie Meyers and Cassandra Clare when it comes to keep her characters evolving without changing them.

*Facepalm
OMG! I should have added that to my trigger warnings, that's SUPER IMPORTANT. I'm an abuse survivor and that scene didn't make me feel uncomfortable because in context with the state of war that was going on in the book it was almost merciful the way that Rhys drugged Feyre everynight but he didn't drugged her to have sex with her. It's hard to explain why this drugging isn't what it seems to be. The MC's Rhys, Tamlin and Feyre are trapped against their will by this evil queen and both tamlin and Rhys are playing their part in pretending they are follwing the queens game. Rhys doesn't have sex with Feyre while she's drugged but he pretends that she's like his slave. It was for Feyre's protection that he did this, at least that's how things are explained in book 2, in which rhys becomes the love interest. I totally bought the ideat that this drugging thing was necessary for Feyre's mental state, as it was she really was losing her mind, but not everyone saw it in the same way. There were marks of Rhys's hands on Feyre's arms and waist so there was some touching, but never sex.

Sex? Really? YOu mean EROTICA: explicit sexual scenes that aren't there to move the plot forward but to turn-on the reader.
Reading erotic material Unknowigly and because Blomsburry children didn't want to market an erotica book as adult material IS BAD, very bad. People, even teens, should decide when they are ready to read this kind of scenes. A greedy and cash starved publishing company shouldn't take the decision for them.

She'll probably think it's porn, which she is against.

Do you have kids or work with them? My daughter is 10. I don't let her read YA unless I've read it myself. Of her friends only about 4 are prolific readers and none of them are reading YA either. YA is meant for 13+ that is literally the market definition.
I guess it's a good idea to put a warning out there. Your comments just made me think about it. My mum didn't have GR to check when I was a teenager so I read all sorts of sexually explicit and violent content as a teenager. Partly because I mostly read adult fiction. YA really only became a big dollar genre over the last decade. My response to coming across it by accident was usually violent delight not shock or disgust. And I'm fairly certain I didn't suffer any lasting harm as a result. ;)
Anyway, I didn't particularly like this book and I completely agree with you regarding the fact that it is erotica that doesn't further the plot.

a) That's new, the.n when the ACOMAF e-book came out last year it went straight to the CHILDREN'S section of AMAZON AND KOBO.
b) But theY "casually" forgot adding the warning to the harcover version, the one that is sold along books like the percy jackson series, twilight and harry potter, Same section of the bookstore as 13 YO buy their books. That's so effed up.
" this was marked as "not appropriate for younger readers" from the beginning, I don't think there was any sort of conspiracy to trick 10 year olds into reading erotica for the sake of book sales"
No it wasn't. Even in netgalle it apperas in the young adult section, Kirkus reviews marked it as appropiate for 14 YO's and that's where bookstore started to selll it.
Conspirarcy or not, it's like they have been put a paid GR librarian to even threaten the people who asks her to remove ACOMAF from any YA listopia. She always says that because Bloombury is a children imprint therefore ACOMAF is a Young adult book. You wont' get GR to admit that ACOMAF is more suited for adults than for the YA market. Poland bananas and bookables mentioned that the book is New adult in ther video reviews and somehow their reviews don't appear in GR. If you remember the carve the mark debacle you'll know that big publisher houses pressure booktubers to post only what they favor.
So yeah there has been false marketing even if you haven't seen it.

Some people don't know the difference between porn and erotica. I wrote an essay on that when FSOG came out.
But there's not denying that ACOMAF is closer to FSOG than to Ignite me, Graceloing or Clockwork Princess.

You can check the blurb for the e-book and you'll see that there's no warning of explicit erotic content besides the name "children" attached to the publisher's name is deceiving by itself.
I'll repeat my comment from before

Thank you for this review/warning!
I picked up the first two volumes of this series as I love Beauty and the Beast retellings. I haven't read either yet as I usually wait until the series is over. But I always try to be careful with which books I buy;
I don't mind mature content as long as it's within limits and not too graphic. Sadly, there seem to be few YA where that is the case. I don't think mature content is a bad thing - it's just that some people, like myself, simply do not want to read it. If I had known about these things sooner I would definitely not have bought these books.
About a year after buying them, I've seen comments pop up about 'awkward sex' in these books. That already threw me off a bit but I figured if it's just one or two scenes it shouldn't bother the story for me. After reading your review, I feel as though this is really not the type of book I want to read.
Thank you, I am now going to get rid of those two volumes, have cancelled my order on the 3rd and won't have to worry about all the additional volumes she suddenly announced.... : )

How old are you?. I think the problem with the erotic scenes in ACOMAF is that there's never fade to black. There are books with sex scenes, but ACOMAF is all about eroticizing everything and it never fades to black and the worst is that most parents and underage kids don't know.

Thanks for commenting again, I don't know where some people get the idea that 10-13 YO's will wait to read books shelved in the teen section of the young adult section. Whenever I go to the bookstore I see very young kids perusing the young adult section because the covers are very eye-catching.

Sorry for the late reply - I did not receive a notification!
I'm most likely over the YA age and there shouldn't be a problem with me reading it other than the fact that I'm a little traditional when it comes to reading books, haha.
As I mentioned before, I don't think mature content is a bad thing - I just personally prefer not to read it. And although I have no children of my own yet, I also see your point of how it's not good that one can't recognise what these books have to offer. If someone buys them knowing what's in them, that's fine and up to them - but it would be good to be able to know in advance..

I know a lot of young and not so young readers that think like you. Even people like me (readers searching for our next steamy read) at times need a break from the smut and read something different. That's why I'm so angry at misleading marketing. People should know what they can expect from a book. If a book contains erotic content reviewers (especially "professional" reviewers like Kirkus and agreggate sites like Netgalley) shouldn't lie about it and let us know.

Hi Redl! Why don't you read my review first and then you'll know what I'm referring to?
ACourtOfMistAndFury Review
Erotic books and sex arent' the same. The problem is the DECEIVING , misleading marketing WITH NO WARNINGS of erotic content and the way Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, Kirkus and some Bootubers/bookblogger are DECEIVING, MISLEADING US.
ACourtOfMistAndFury REVIEW
IF they had some ethics and ADDed SOME EROTIC CONTENT WARNINGS then the decision is in the reader whatever age we're talking about. BUT DON'T LIE TO US! I can't give YA books as a gift anymore because the erotic content. Do you know that 12 and 13 YO are reading ACOMAF?
Please read the kind of erotic content I'm TALKING ABOUT There's a difference between sexual content and erotic contentit's not sexual content, it's erotica content.
Would you read Fifty shades of grey to a 14 YO? That's the kind of erotic content I'm talking about.

I wouldn't read FSOG to a teenager mainly because it is badly written and they would hardly be able to distinguish real life sexuality from the unreal version of BDSM it marketed.

My mother reads racier stuff for sure. My father is so old...I know he would be embarassed because he doesn't easily speak of anything sexual or erotic, but he never judged either. I understand your point clearly anyway.
Oh I see, the whole noise-party...it is a bit absurd I must say, I found it in more books.Never in real life. I hate the use of sheath too to be honest. And I've read Maas uses 'feasting' way too much! I dont know, I find direct terms the best. Mountains shutters beause of orgasms??? It should be funny, shouldn't it? With all the problems we already have, I don't think destroying this planet via orgasms would be very wise :-) That is quite silly...and strangely anti-erotic...

RedL. wrote: "I found there's Always a bit of polemic around sex included in YA books"
Not YA books, NEW ADULT BOOKS, the series have been shelves thousands of times as New adult, way more than it has been shelved as YA
I have an easy test to erotic content in books that should be marketed as NA but aren't: Read aloud the sexiest scenes of the book to a group of underage kids or your parents. Or your boss. If you feel certain discomfort, then the sex scene is too much for a young audience.
READ ALOUD THIS TO YOUR PARENTS/UNDERAGE KIDS/BOSS(view spoiler)
/quotes/8465...
Of course the easiest way would be if the publishing companies had ethics and added PG disclaimer of erotic content, but Bloomsbury children is too greedy and unethical to do that.
"I wouldn't read FSOG to a teenager mainly because it is badly written and they would hardly be able to distinguish real life sexuality from the unreal version of BDSM"
In the case of A court of mist and fury it's well-written but the sex scenes are in a way an unreal version of bestial sex. Everyone hisses, snarls, growls, faes call oral sex "licking" or "feasting" and the mountains shatter when the hero orgasms.
This is the only sex scene in ACOMAF that isn't unreal:

If you do think the mislabelling is wanted and only driven by sales, I do understand the grievance.
It is driven by sales. What other reason could there be? They want money and YA is easier to market than NA and adult fiction.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
I Told People That I Know...to NOT Read The a Court of Thorns and Roses, Because Bloomsbury Children/Teens Published Explicit Scenes. I Even Warned Them to Not Buy The Series for Me Since I Read The First 4 Books of Throne of Glass-- Which I Donated to The Library a Year and a Half Ago. Every Single Time I See The Books-- in The Teen Section. I Glare at Them
Just in Case, You Don't Know-- The Movie Rights for This Book Were Bought a Year Ago. Hopefully This Will Make People Realize That This Series is Not Young Adult at All, Especially if it Gets The R Rating or 18A Rating.
Kulzer said, “A Court of Thorns and Roses contains all the ingredients of a theatrical experience. We have been working hard to adapt a screenplay which captures the magic and excitement of the books and look forward to finding the right filmmaker for this ambitious project.
Maas added, “I’m tremendously excited to be working with Constantin and Tempo Productions on bringing these books to life. This team is so passionate about adapting Feyre’s journey for the big screen, and I can’t wait to see how everything comes together.

V. A Court of Wings and Ruin is NEW ADULT/EROTICA but Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ editors won't tell you to include it in the choice awards

As much as I hate the publishers are doing this

and that many people in the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ community are willing to cover up the true content of the book in the hopes of getting money, free books or a publishing contract (*coughs prostitutes *cough) I'm not for telling people what they should or shouldn't read. I'm just putting the info out there because NO ONE ELSE IS TALKING ABOUT IT
Not many booktubers and goodreads reviewers, especially not the ones with direct relation with the big five will try to go against the marketing agenda of the big five but people should read whatever they want to.
My crusade is more for HONEST INFORMATION and to benefit the people who PAY FOR THEIR OWN BOOKS. It's really hypocrite from the top reviewers to try not to tell the real genre of this series (new adult/adult/erotica) in exchange of free books. So you want other people to overpay for p@rn content when you yourself are receiving this book and many others for free? I pay for my own books and I hate that. Don't misuderstand my motives to try to put this in the spotlight. I have nothing against this author. She's talented and she could do better without her agent and publishing company. It's her name that drives the sales. She has no need to become vulgar in her marketing strategies.

Constantin (Mortal instruments, Pompeei) makes very crappy movies, but I don't think they'll keep the sex scenes. I recently watched After and they sanitized that story so much that it was unrecognizable.
