I read this. Yes. When I was young. At the time it appeared to be fascism for hippies. Proto-Manson, then. I'm struggling to remember anything. He comes from Mars and he starts a new religion and he eats people. No - he gets eaten by people. I think that's it. A bit like Jesus. If Jesus was a fascist. You know what - I can't remember a thing. It's late.

Stacey 'hippie and woo,' I think you just did. :)

Milo I love hippies!

Paul Bryant I do, don't I. Gosh. Darn it.

Jeremy Paul, I so enjoy reading your reviews that I hope you'll re-read this and see how you feel now! I'm currently listening to the audiobook and it's great. Perhaps better than 3 stars?

Paul Bryant Probably is! I have a bunch of sf novels to get to which I should have read by now though...

Virginia I can see you really grokked it.

Paul Bryant that became part of my regular vocabulary, and later I was surprised when people didn't grok back

Robin Goodfellow "fascism for hippies", "proto-Manson" -- spot on

Paul Bryant thanks Robin - that's the way I remember it

message 10: by Lara (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lara Me too re grokking! My father used the word (but then again my father was an LSD taking hippie) and he and me and people in both milieus either groked each other or they didn’t.
I remember reading and or rereading parts of the book something about water and pools sex?

message 11: by Paul (new) - rated it 3 stars

Paul Bryant I vaguely remember that. So you survived hippie parents!

message 12: by Ann (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ann I read this maybe 10 years ago and I cannot remember a thing except the word grok, and maybe some people having sex on shag rugs??? Is that right???

message 13: by Paul (new) - rated it 3 stars

Paul Bryant having sex everywhere, not just on rugs, if I remember right

message 14: by Robin (new) - rated it 1 star

Robin Goodfellow If you wish to relive this crap in brief and enjoy a scathing takedown, I wrote a review as well /review/show...

Paul Bryant wow, that was a lot of fun.... you read it so we don't have to try anymore. I will amend my own review forthwith.

Alan I can tell you his Citizen of the Galaxy is much better for a 14 year old, comparative culture for teens. Never read more than one or two more sci-if; they were all worse than this Citizen of the Galaxy.

I will always consider it the greatest tragedy of my lifetime that the hippies were so quickly discredited, leaving them no opportunity to fuck things up like everyone else did.
