it was amazing
bookshelves: book-club, adult, fiction

Wow. I devoured this book in one day, and I was completely enthralled by it. I was particularly struck by the main character's amazing mothering (and/or - the author's creation of this amazing mothering), and by the all of the nuances of the situation that were explored - and through the view of a 5 year old, no less! In short, I thought it was creative and enthralling (I know I already said that one - it just was). I feel like this is what a Jodi Picoult book would be like if it were actually good literature.

Some specifics...

(view spoiler)

I've been thinking about the book all day...Can't wait to discuss at book club!!

Bridget Ripped from the headlines a la Ms. Picoult?

Heather oh no, it is? I just knew it was an up-and-comer!

message 3: by Flannery (new) - added it

Flannery I didn't know that either--I heard some good things about it. Hmmm--what did you pick for this month's pick?

Heather Book Thief. Weren't u included in our email?

Heather PS It is fine but so far I'm not loving it.

Flannery BT or Room? My Seattle book club picked BT too so I'm finishing it for next week:-) We can discuss!

Heather BT. I'm not sure now that I want to read Room after B's comment! Ha.

Bridget It may still be good, but it IS ripped from the headlines...

Heather I don't even know what it's about! What is the story?(the real life one and/or the one in the book!)

Bridget 3.5 months later...

Heather ha. Thanks. I did find out that it was about that type of thing, but when I put what I knew about the plot together w/you saying it was ripped from the headlines, I assumed it was based on the Elizabeth Smart case, which is kind of similar. I still really want to read it but based on that article, I can't imagine that it won't be pretty disturbing! (although it sounds like maybe it's about after they emerge, not what happens while they're actually trapped.)

Bridget Watsky was telling me she read it and loved it, which is what made me come to the page today...she didn't say it was super disturbing or anything though.

Heather oh good. I will get to it eventually! It's been on the most-read lists and you know how I love those! : )

Heather PS I really miss you!! It didn't feel like a big hole at first, b/c it's not like we saw each other every day, but now that it's been enough time that I normally would have seen you by now, I'm really feeling it!! Boo. Come back and visit soon!!!!

Bridget I know, it's funny that you said that, but I just recently (like this week) crossed the threshold of being ike, CRAP, I need to see my friends!! Thankfully Chels is coming down today for the weekend. I'm coming home for Easter, but unfortunately nothing before that!

Heather yeah, it's totally like that point freshman year of college when you realize that it's not camp and you're not going home. A month or so sounds about right for that. Glad Chels is coming to visit. What weekend is Easter, and how long will you be here??

Bridget Ha. Exactly! Easter is April 24. I fly in Friday night after work and fly home Sunday night...so if you're around, hopefully we can get together Saturday at some point?

Heather definitely!!! I never go home for Easter b/c I don't celebrate, and my parents are the opposite and super-involved in church stuff that weekend so it's not a good time to visit anyway. I am putting it on my calendar!!

Heather After reading it, I can say that even if the general scenario is ripped from the headlines, the way she explores it definitely was not.

LOL at this. I've still never read any Jodi Picoult. Don't think I ever will...

Heather I actually "QUITE" enjoyed Sister's Keeper. It wasn't good literature but it was still entertaining!

Suzie Friedman I agree--- I loved the perspective of the book. Couldn't put it down. Thought about it afterwards for quite a while. And I TOTALLY agree about your Jodi Picoult comment! :)
