Read 3 times. Last read January 19, 2024 to January 22, 2024.

My third time reading this book, and it was enriched by the annotations, which provide many wonderful insights on proposed philosophical meanings of the story, inspiration behind certain elements of the book, facts about other books in the series, and more. Love that the illustrations are colored based on which of the four quadrants of Oz Dorothy is traveling through.

Terrific review, Hannah. I'm finally reading The Wizard of Oz this year. I loved the 1939 musical as a child and really embraced Return to Oz, apparently much more faithful to the books, in my 30s.
Return to Oz is loosely based on the 2nd and 3rd Oz books.

@Joe Valdez: Thank you. I grew up with Return to Oz and loved it! My brother and I spent a lot of time watching the musical as children, but I never really liked it - not as much as the book. :) I'm happy for you, finally getting around to reading the books this year. You're in for a treat.
@Gary Sundell: Reading Book #2 has made me want to buy Return to Oz and watch it again. If only I can put these books down, I just might get around to the film. :)

Baum wrote 14, then Ruth Plumly Thompson took over the series after Baum's death writing nearly 20 additional books. Other authors continued the series to a total of 40 books.
@Gary Sundell: I read 1 through 15 as a young girl. If it weren't for you, I'd have never known there were so many additional books in the series. :)
Book 15 was originally attributed to Baum but was in fact written by Thompson.
@Gary Sundell: I'll be mindful of that when I get to reading book 15. I'm curious to see if there's a noticeable difference in the writing.
I really need to venture down to the basement to find my Oz books.

Good review and informative. I didn't know about the state of fantasy literature at the time, might have to look up some 19th century works down the line.

I just find it kind of dull, read a little of the story, read the annotations. Back and forth. I have the book from same publisher for all of the Sherlock Holmes stories and Alice in Wonderland. The constant annotations take away from the story, but I find I just can't ignore the annotations.

I have a few annotated books, and for each one I also have an edition without annotations for when I simply want to enjoy the story. I only pick up the annotated versions when I'm keen to dig deeper or do some research.
