Jill Bonham Hillary--I so loved both of your books. I can't wait to see what you come up with next!

Hillary Thank you Jill! Authors never tire of hearing comments like that!

Ellen You might be biased in your review, but you're right on target. I LOVED this book! I read it soon after it was published and will present it to my book club tomorrow evening. You are a wonderful writer. I also enjoyed your second novel. Keep up the great work!

Melissa I can't say that I loved the book as the subject matter was profoundly disturbing. But it was masterful. It left me speechless.

Andrea I'm reading When She Woke right now. I had no idea you wrote Mudbound (which I had already read). I really liked Mudbound, I felt like you had some most excellent and unique insights into the characters and their motivations. I don't really know if I am using the right words to describe it, only that I would recommend the book to others.

Ellen Melissa wrote: "I can't say that I loved the book as the subject matter was profoundly disturbing. But it was masterful. It left me speechless."

Melissa, you're right that it was profoundly disturbing, especially since things like this really happened. I did love the book, though, because of Hillary Jordan's remarkable writing. You're right that it was masterful! Here's to more of her skilled writing and provocative subject matter.

Hillary, my book club loved it, too!

Bridget Van I read When She Woke first and I felt that it left me a little flat. The characters were a little too one dimensional for me. But I liked it enough to try Mudbound and have to say that the complexity of the story blew me away. There were so many layers to this story. I really felt like I knew and understood the characters. I felt you tackled the issues very well. Please keep writing. I will read your next book :).

Jennifer Great book! I read When She Woke first and found this. Excellent!

Amy One of the best books I have ever read. Wow! This book blew me away! Keep doing what you're doing, you are very good at it! I have "When She Woke" waiting for me now :)

Hillary Wow - I just saw all these comments. Thanks all!

message 11: by Sarina (new)

Sarina I just picked this book up 2 days ago and couldn't stop reading. :) loved it!

Debbie Read this book awhile back and absolutely loved it. I did not want this book end.

Kim Whitley-Gaynor This book is one of my all-time favorites, Hillary. If I had to explain why, I guess it's because the book reminded me of some of my family members. Maybe because I was raised in West Texas and could identify with the dirt and mud. Perhaps because I have seen racism and kindness both. I gave copies to as gifts to family members who also love to read. Looking forward to reading "When She Woke".

Muire I loved this book and I also loved When She Woke. I was gripped from start to finish, really enjoyable and interesting reads!

Wendy I absolutely loved this book Hilary! Recommend it highly!

Ralpha Wharton I loved this book! And the end was a well written surprise.

Rhonda Maydwell Hillary- I loved your book! I came across it in the most unlikely way. I am on a short break from college (returned at age 41) and wanted to read something not assigned. What a treat! I was amazed at the depth. I always read a book cover to cover, and I sure am glad I did this time too! I am working to complete my English degree and am an aspiring writer. I was extremely encouraged to see that this novel was birthed as a writing assignment. Thank you for this book and unexpected encouragement.

Christopher Hicks Hillary, this book is Fantastic , seriously the best book i've read in some time. I couldn't put it down. Loved it!!!

Tanya Gerald Can't wait to discuss this book with my book club. Well done!

Stacielynn Thank you, Hillary. I am generally a very cynical reader and I was captivated by the story and your voice.

Patricia Hickman Fellow Southern novelist, here. I pinned you and promote all of us southern writers. Just trying to make a living the best that we can.

Lauren I could not put your book down!! I felt such a part of the story. Thank you!

Byron I bought it about a year ago and just started reading it. Amazing narrative. I rate a book by the amount of time I think about it while doing other activities, wishing I'll have a break to go back and continue reading. this is one of those I am tempted to drop what I am doing and go back to read. Well done! Do us a favor and keep writing.

message 24: by Laura (new) - added it

Laura This book, like "When She Woke" was another amazing piece of fiction. Please, please, please continue writing. I am so excited to have stumbled on your books, and I can't wait to read more.

Sarah Hillary have you heard the Recorded Books version of Mudbound? It was masterful and made the characters really come alive for me. I look forward to reading or listening to more of your work.

Stacielynn My book group met last night to discuss this book. I loved the book and was surprised that it got mixed reviews -- but that is exactly what I love about taking the time to discuss a book with others.
No one could deny that it was very well-written. Nonetheless, some were unable to get past the disturbing nature of the content. Others found the plot predictable. One thing most agreed on was that the neighbor's incest was an unnecessary plot twist-- there was enough gruesome stuff going on already.
What reactions have you all gotten?

Fenny I read this book in Laura's perspective. I found my voice in her narrative and it gave a tangible interpretation of what suffocation and mindlessness means. I'm now a fan of Hillary Jordan.

Anne When I worked in a library I had this one on my hold list for the longest time. It sounded interesting, but I never found time to read it. I finally found some time for it and am sad I put it off for so long. This will be in my top ten books for 2013. Great storytelling!

Dipti Love this book...I borrowed it from the library because it was recommended by a book club...I am now going to buy one for my own collection. Love the way it is written and the way it unfolds the story...two thumbs up!

Barbi Hillary, as I lay in my bed reading this book, I can only pray that you are typing your fingers raw on your next novel. (Sorry, I am the selfish sort when in regard to great books!)
Type, little Hillary, type!!!

Amy I love your books!

Terry Joseph GREAT book! Just finished it last night. You did an excellent job making the characters come alive. I felt like I was there. Amazing. Congratulations and thank you.

Kyliecallme I adored them both... Finished them both in one day each, respectively. (Mudbound just last night, When She Woke several months ago.) The highest compliment I can give, beyond a whole lot of (well derserved) superlatives, is that I passed them both along to my mother. Who is older... And in her words, "Too old for that sci fi sort of stuff!" (Referring to the colored skin in "When She Woke".) Luckily, my praise was so vehement & joyful, she's willing to look past it & read both.

2 of my favorite books this year. Thank you SO much :)

Elisa Brienza Just finished Mudbound! Thought it was fantastic. Such unforgettable characters and such a compelling story! Thank you!

Shannon Campbell I've been looking for a long time an author is can follow. I've read two of your books. you are my author. Thank you for excellent characters, an excellent book, an unforgettable story. I loved them both.

Kyle I can't believe this was your first book. Bravo.

Hillary Thank you guys! Authors need these kind words, it helps us keep going. I'm currently working on novel #3, a sequel to MUDBOUND that I'm calling FATHERLANDS. If all goes well it will be published in Fall 2016.

message 38: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne Can't wait to check that out. I really, really enjoyed Mudbound and hope to recommend it to our library's community "One Read."

Shiloh Thank you for this book!
My husband picked it up for me one day saying "it sounds like something you'd like"... that was an understatement. It was amazing. You are a very talented writer, and your ability to provoke such a broad range of emotion is astounding.
I can't wait to read your other novels!

Cecelia Chandler Excellent book! Hooray for Hillary Jordan!

Germany As a black woman what I appreciated about Mudbound is that the characters were not stereotypical. Not all of the white characters were horrible unkind racists, and not all of the black characters were sugary sweet. This is a problems that authors suffer through. As if they are afraid that they will be called racist if there are sympathetic racist whites as well as blacks who are militant. I read this book quite a few years ago with my reading partner who is white and we both appreciated the very sad story. Thank you again

message 46: by James (new)

James Tanner very stirring novel

Gayle Wow! I reserve my five star ratings for only the most profound and moving of books I read. Even as I was reading it, I knew it merited a five star rating. Thanks for a thought provoking book. I will reflect on this book for a while even though I have finished reading it. I

Henry Schaefer I really, really loved this book Hillary. I picked it up at the Vegas airport and finished it by the next day. I’m looking forward to reading more from you - keep up the great work!
