This Savage Song (Monsters of Verity, #1)
by
PRELUDE
All his life August Flynn wanted to be in FTF, to make a difference, to matter. To live. His father Henry Flynn prevents crimes in South City during the day by putting Flynn Task Force cadets everywhere streets, rooftops, lanes and alleys and hunts monsters at night with the help of Sunai the most invincible, as the say, kind of monsters and August is one of them.
All her life Kate Harker wanted to come back to V-City, to belong, to be like her father. To make him proud. Callum Harker is the "governor" of North City and offers protection to those who are willing to pay. Keeping monsters under the heel is a risky business, but people are ready to give everything for the sake of their own safety or at least for the illusion.
Living on the opposite sides of the wall The Seam in the world, where violence breeds violence and every crime results in a monster, both August and Kate try to get what they want. But as they move towards their goals, they start to realise there is no such thing as black and white, and sometimes real monsters can be hiding among humans.
VERSE 1
Of Monsters and Men
I
August Flynn was born as a monster but isn't deprived of humanity. Being sent to the school under the alias in order to get close to the Harker's only daughter, August finally has other reasons to leave Flynn compound than just to take someone's soul with the music. And in his case it's not an exaggeration. Despite his shy looks, he can easily take souls by playing the violin.
To be honest, August is almost the only likeable character in This Savage Song, even though I can't say we got a lot of character development, so I didn't have a chance to know him better. But he's the only one (apart from his sister and father) who tries to act as humanly as possible, even towards those who don't really deserve it (I'm looking at you, Kate), he's constantly struggling with his nature(I got some vampire-ish vibe here, all those vampires-"vegetarians" trying to live without human blood...(view spoiler) ) and has a mature voice (unlike someone, Kate).
II
Unlike August, Kate Harker was born as a human but with a huge pinch of monstrosity (if you haven't already figured it out). Being sent from one school to another outside of her father's city, Kate tried to complicate his life and leave him with the only option: to let her come back.
Kate Harker was a difficult character to like. And I didn't. She definitely has daddy issues you can easily notice it even while flipping pages, she constantly repeats how she will make her father proud, how she's her father's daughter, yada, yada, yada but it doesn't justify her behaviour and attitude. I do understand that she's a teenager, but at some point all this show-off and "I'll show 'em all" started to bore me to death.

(view spoiler)
I do understand she had a troubled childhood (view spoiler) but still. The way she thinks ("By the end of the week, Colton would be hers. After all, if she couldn’t rule a school, she didn’t deserve to run a city") and talks is way too arrogant and spoiled.
Oh. And that "teardrop scar in the corner of her eye"...
(view spoiler)
VERSE 2
Monsters here, Monsters there
I
Schwab's initial concept violence breeds violence is indeed brilliant. Monsters being the consequences of crimes, being the symptoms, while criminals are the real disease. How smart it sounded. But the more I read, the more issues I had with one particular kind of monsters.
While Corsai and Malchai are "usual" monsters that feed on everyone, Sunai aren't: they feed on sinners. (view spoiler) why give them that many perks? And they're different not only from other monsters, but also from each other.
(view spoiler)
VERSE 3
Oh, Monster, what's a Sin?
I
It may seem that I touched all the major flaws I could see, but the most interesting is yet to come. So here is the question. Who decides whether a person is a sinner or an innocent soul? Who decides if the soul deserves to be marked as a red one? Where is the line between violent and non-violent acts? Is it connected to someone's intentions? To the beliefs? Do you have to cause a death one way or another? Or is it a totally random thing? Violence is a very subjective thing after all.

ELEGY
Despite the huge info dump during the first 20% (when I had no idea what was going on and where the plot was going), I still have questions. Considering the fact that This Savage Song is a first book in the duology, I see how nicely it prepared the ground for the second installment. I still had a really nice time, since I was buddy-reading it with my fellow partners in crime: Katerina, Vira and Nastassja and I do hope at least some of my questions will find the answers in the sequel.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

Not with a bang, but with a whimper.
In with gunfire and out with smoke.

Burning down the church was really a last resort; she’d already broken a girl’s nose, smoked in the dormitories, cheated on her first exam, and verbally harassed three of the nuns. But no matter what she did, St. Agnes Academy kept forgiving her. That was the problem with Catholic schools. They saw her as someone to be saved.
But Kate didn’t need salvation; she simply needed out.
Unlike August, Kate Harker was born as a human but with a huge pinch of monstrosity (if you haven't already figured it out). Being sent from one school to another outside of her father's city, Kate tried to complicate his life and leave him with the only option: to let her come back.

“Monsters, monsters, big and small,
They’re gonna come and eat you all!

VERSE 3
Oh, Monster, what's a Sin?
I
No one else could see it, but to August’s eyes, it loomed in the air, a ghostly thing with too many features for a shadow, too few for a man. August knew it for what it was, an echo of violence, a mark of sin. Somewhere in the city, a monster lived and killed because of this man, because of something he’d done.
It may seem that I touched all the major flaws I could see, but the most interesting is yet to come. So here is the question. Who decides whether a person is a sinner or an innocent soul? “It hurts, he whispered.
“What does? asked Kate.
“Being. Not being. Giving in. Holding out. No matter what I do, it hurts. Kate tipped her head back against the tub. “That’s life, August, she said. “You wanted to feel alive, right? It doesn’t matter if you’re monster or human. Living hurts.”

She almost laughed, a shallow chuckle cut short by pain.

“You’re a really shitty monster, August Flynn.”

“The voice was low and smooth, almost hypnotizing, and a second later the shadow shifted and stepped forward, resolving into a man with broad shoulders and a wiry form, all lean muscle and long bone. The FTF fatigues fit him perfectly, and beneath his rolled sleeves, small black crosses circled both forearms. Above a chiseled jaw, fair hair swept down into eyes as black as pitch. The only imperfection was a small scar running through his left eyebrow—a relic from his first years—but despite the mark, Leo Flynn looked more god than monster.”

And did you know there's going to be a sequel to Vicious? *^* "
Whoa, congrats! I'm planning to finish reading Ruin and Rising tomorrow or so and start reading The Archived. The cover is so gorgeous and the idea is so unique. I can't imagine how Schwab's brain works, but Vicious and ADSOM are SO SO good. And I really love the writing. I fell in love with ADSOM from the very first sentence: it's just so beautifully written!
Yep, I know! Although for me Vicious is an incredible stand-alone book, I'm really excited to meet Victor (or whoever it will be in the sequel) again. The whole villain-not-really-a-villain-but-a-person-who-believes-he's-the-one-who-does-right-things is amazing.

I agree, Schwab is an amazing writer! Can't wait to read more of her.
the waiting is going to kill me tho"
HAHAHA, "have fun" sounds so comforting after the previous phrase :D I'll try!
I want to read her Near Witch series as well, I guess it's something different from her other books

Alas! Can't say it was bad, but even though I read it pretty fast (but maybe it's because I was ill and had nothing to do), it was still.. dragging. If only there were less holes and the pace was like in that chapter(view spoiler) !

(view spoiler) But I agree with you when you say that it creates a very useful loophole, and that she should address this in the next book. I also want to know more info about how the Sunai "choose" their instruments! And I definitely think she'll touch upon that issue because she purposefully mentioned it quite a few times without explaining further.
Great review!

Thank you, Izzy!
Schwab's books always make me think a lot, I'm pretty sure the second book will blow my mind completely!
(view spoiler)
As for their musical instruments.. I have no questions about it, I guess: (view spoiler) But yep, I'd love definite explanation too!

Thanks, Kat!
I can't say I'm reeeeally hopeful (usually it leads to disappointment), plus I have a couple of series with first books being "meh" and sequels being "WOW", but at least I hope it will have more action and plot, so we won't be wondering what's the point of the story.

Anyway, I won't be able to resist the temptation to see how good (or bad) the sequel will be

Hahaha, indeed! I so hope we'll get Allegro/Kate scene, I'd love to see August's face when the cat will start to hiss.

I think the only moment that truly does not let me go of this book in peace is the concept of sin in it. As you've correctly noticed and as we discussed it, who, indeed, decides what sin deserves to be punishable. I just think Schwab did a lousy job exploring such an interesting element and not giving it a proper explanation.

Yep, this sin-thing really bothers me, of all people, I didn't expect Victoria wouldn't give us proper explanations.

@ Julia, I so did not expect Victoria to be so lousy with explanations in her book. But maybe it's not the only book that wasn't great in her biography. We still need to check the Archived and her Witch series (maybe (?))

I'd love to read The Archived, since it's been on my shelf for 2 years now with its gorgeous cover, as for the Near Witch.. Not likely :/

Then we should definitely buddy-read Archived someday.
YES :c
Though I can wait for Victoria's books forever (Victoria, if you're reading it, I don't mean it. Don't make me wait for too long. I'm not like Eli Ever D: ). And I haven't read The Archived series yet, so I've something to keep me busy :D And AGOS will come out in February, sooo yay!
