This is an intriguing read, about a serial killer in Russia in 1953, around the time of Stalin's death. An MGB officer is ordered to cover up one of the murders, as it was apparently policy at the time not to admit that crime existed in their 'perfect' society, but he ends up compelled to catch the killer instead.

This is a re-read for me. I originally read it on my Kindle a couple of years ago when it was the book of the month for my workplace Book Club. I enjoyed it then so when I had the chance to pick up the entire trilogy in audiobook format recently I jumped at it.

As always with a second reading, there was stuff I missed the first time around, which is why I enjoy re-reading. Knowing the ultimate outcome also shed new light on the proceedings and made me appreciate how well the author planned the book.

My only reason for not giving this book full marks is that the series of extreme coincidences that drive the plot are a little hard to swallow at times. It doesn't spoil my enjoyment of the novel but I did finding myself thinking 'yeah, right' a few times.

Anyway, that's the re-read of book one done. On to reading book two for the first time!

Sam Quixote I really liked TRS's The Farm earlier this year so I know I'll give this guy another shot - pretty sure it's gonna be this one!

Paul Yeah, I'm planning on moving on to The Farm when I've finished the Leo Demidov trilogy.

Trish I only know about this story because I've seen the trailer for the movie adaptation with Tom Hardy. *blushes* Does one have to read all three or do we get the solution to this murder in book one?!

The first book is a stand-alone story, resolved with a neat little bow. Well, not that neat, really, but you do get the solution to the murders in book one.

Trish Ah ok, so I woudn't have to read them all. That's good. Lately, it fells, authors can't tie up their story in just one book and many are so focused on getting multiple books out there that they lose sight of the story and its conclusion so it gets all fucked up.

Paul Yeah, I think it's because publishers are looking for franchises these days, not individual novels. It's a shame but market forces rule the world.

Trish *sigh* I know. And even if there's one author successfully persuading a publisher to give him/her a chance with "just one" book, they want more and pronto (which usually isn't good for quality either). It sucks.
