A beautifully written novel set in the rural town of Holt, Colorado, Plainsong is a book I will not soon forget. The prose is modest yet so elegant in its simplicity. Nothing is overdone and yet what happens to the characters in this book is far from uneventful. A pair of young brothers that have to learn to adjust without a mother in the home, a teenage girl pregnant and without a home, a father trying to raise his boys on his own, and a pair of staunch old bachelors who are presented with a somewhat extraordinary proposal - these all warmed my heart and I had a hard time detaching myself from their lives at story's end. I don't want to say any more than this about the plot; you will have to read this yourself to appreciate all the connections and how their lives intersect with one another in a most meaningful way. My heart ached at times for the young brothers, Bobby and Ike, as well as for the quietly dignified mother-to-be, Victoria. The McPheron brothers and an infirm elderly lady named Mrs. Stearns put a smile on my face and offered me a newfound faith in humanity. This is a story that resonates with hope and beauty and has earned nothing short of 5 stars from me.

Good to know! I have this one on my kindle and the only thing that's kept me from reading it is it's on my kindle, lol.
I feel I have missed something special by not discovering Haruf earlier on. I enjoyed Our Souls at Night.
Julie- I know what you mean! I have the same excuse with my kindle books!
Sara - this is my first by Haruf. Wish I had discovered him sooner, too.
When I get this one under my belt, perhaps we can buddy read the next one in line. :)

Thank you for your review. I added this to my TBR list. The only Haruf I've read is Our Souls at Night, which was one of my favorite reads of 2015. As you say in your review, the prose is beautiful in its simplicity. If the writing is similar here, I predict I will love it.
I tried this one when I was younger and put it aside- I have a feeling I will appreciate it now. Its going on my TBR. I love reviews like yours Candi, that make me think I misjudged something , and that make me want to go back (with the wisdom of age!!) and give it another go.

Lovely review, Candi. I strongly suggest you read the rest of the story of Victoria and the McPheron's in Eventide. (In spite of GR labelling it as "Plainsong #3, Benediction is actually a separate story, though set in Holt, as all his books are.)

There is something about the title that always attracted me. Ever since I first saw this book in a bookstore I wanted to read it but somehow I could not. I ordered this book recently and plan on reading it soon.
