did not like it

Having read and loved Five Quarters of the Orange Five Quarters of the Orange by Joanne Harris by Joanne Harris, I was really looking forward to reading Chocolat. Unfortunalty this particular book just didnt suit me.

I didn't enjoy the plot of the novel and the found the characters underdeveloped and no sense of time and place. I rarly rate a novel 1 star but I found nothing in this stroy to to keep me entertained and I felt like I was reading each chapter over and over. I did finish the book as I was waiting for something to happen that would redeem the novel but butI by the end I was left feeling very disappointed. Many of my friends have loved this book but it just didnt work for me.

Lisa How disappointing Dem - hate it when that happens!

Phrynne My favourite book of hers is Gentlemen and Players. I didn't mind Chocolat but it is a bit odd.

Thanks Phrynne. I will add that one to my list.

Carmen Sorry this was a disappointment, Dem.

Melanie Well, at least the movie has Johnnie Depp :-)

Colleen I own both of these and have yet to read either. I better start with Orange and see. I would have to read Chocolat before seeing the movie, but that gives me incentive. :)

Carmen Is there kissing in this book?

Mandy Radley I agree Gentlemen and players is also one of my favourite books by Joanne Harris. However I did love Chocolate and also Peaches for Monsieur Le Cure the third in the series but didn't enjoy Lollipop Shoes.

Suzanne Lilly Interesting. This is one of my all time favorite books. I love the way Joanne Harris wields her words...she created vivid imagery for me in this book. The movie was a thin recreation of the book, in my opinion.

I have a friend who was so disappointed that I didn't like this book Suzanne as she said she loved it as well and has read it a couple of times. I will try Gentlemen and Players and see how that goes.

I really liked this book, and now, from this review, it makes me wonder what Five quarters of an orange is like? I need to read it and compare!! Ta for the honest review!

Shelley Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. It's completely fine that you didn't like it. I actually do love this story, but I have to agree with the point that it was very very hard to tell what time period the story took place. When I first read the novel I thought it took place in the early 1900's until they talked about cars and vehicles.
