did not like it

I only read this book(or tried to read this book) because my best friend said it was AMAZING! I can't even begin to tell you how wrong she was. This book represents all that is wrong in the world of food. These two authors aren't teaching you how to eat right, they are teaching you to be anorexic (If you look at the sample menus they equate to aprroximately 700 calories/day-that is ridiculous!). The only reason this book got so much press was because Posh was photographed carrying it. The self proclaimed expert authors of this book are a former agent of a modelling company(who says she is a self taught expert) and a former model (who says she got her masters degree in holistic nutrition-when I looked it up it is from an unaccreditted school-would you take advice from a doctor who went to an unacreditted university?) They further the stereotype that in order to be happy you have to be a size 0. It is sad to me that woman look to this kind of book, where they talk down to you(ex."Perhaps you have a lumpy ass because you are preserving your fat cells with diet soda." and "If you'd drag your cankles to a health food store...") in order to find inspiration. This type of mentality does not lead to healty eating or healthy body image. Eat moderately, exercise, and the rest falls in to place. Don't listen to these pyscho girls who don't even have to education to be talking about these things. You want to learn about nutrition and how to lose weight? Go to a dietician and they will help you in a healthy way without calling you a fat ass.

Jessica You tell 'em, girlfriend :)
I had a feeling the book was going to be like that.

Laura Amen, sister! You just wrote down everything I thought about this book. Furthermore, these women should do a little research on veganism in pregnancy as it is not considered healthy or safe for the infant, and I doubt that a child should follow a vegan diet until they are old enough to make that decision for themselves.

Katie Couldn't agree more!!!! How did this POS get published???

Katie Hey, I just wanted to say that I really liked your review of this book. Thanks for posting.

Sara Loved your review. I wrote mine a few days ago and pretty much had the exact same sentiment.

Great review! I've convinced myself that the entire Skinny Bitch empire is actually a parody.

Donna I totally agree. A friend told me to read it too and I didn't even finish it! It's just a piece of crap!

Lucy White Oh my God. Denial is a terrible thing.
You're wrong. Veganism is the healthiest diet out there. I've been vegan for two years, I'm 16, and I'm certainly not anorexic. I've never felt better.

message 9: by Jacy (new) - rated it 1 star

Jacy Michelle, I really wish I would have read your review before I read this book. You review is dead-on. I had no idea that this book was completely focused on becoming Vegan and farm slaughtering. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with being Vegan, but I felt the title was very misleading.

Your not in the womb. Thats the difference.

fakecake A pure, plant based diet is completely healthy for your body. It is pure, nutrient-rich, plant-based whole foods that are loaded with fiber and phytochemicals that are going to send signals to your body it's fullfilled and let you be your natural weight.
If you would like to really research pure vegetarianism for yourself, I recommend reading 'The China Study' by T. Colin Campbell. The New York Times has recognized 'The China Study' (China-Oxford-Cornell Diet and Health Project) as the “Grand Prix of epidemiology and the “most comprehensive large study ever undertaken of the relationship between diet and the risk of developing disease. This was a study in support of a pure, plant-based diet (veganism) for the most part.
Allow me to tell you, I have been vegan for 3 1/2 years and I lost the 33 extra pounds I had been carrying around since after high school. And I have enjoyed more energy and have a higher drive to exercise and feel great! :) Hope this helps.

Actually there was a case in Toronto where a vegan couple tried sustaining their newborn with soy milk instead of breast milk. The baby died from malnutrition.

I'm actually a vegetarian, and veganism is cool-- but I would never condone feeding a baby like that! It needs all of the nourishment it can get.

I loved your review of the book. And for the record, I'm in the fashion industry, and not all of us are stuck up bitches like these!

Kellen I loved it, I love how they tell you stop smoking because it's so 1987. Some women actually think smoking is still sexy!

I thought these women had guts to say what they did about Dairy because it is true. I did a research paper on the Food Industry in College and the FDA does not CARE if what you eat is killing you, as long as it's slowly enough that they won't be blamed. All of that stuff about the treatment of animals that are grown for their meat is true too. ....Sometimes the truth hurts.

Linda Longo Love your review. I am only a few chapters in and am about to throw this POS in the trash.

message 15: by Toni (new) - rated it 1 star

Toni I loved your review & wish I had read it before I spent money on this stupid book. I'm so mad at myself. I also researched the authors (before I read your review) & found the same things you did about them! Unbelievable! This book is just a big marketing ploy for Veganism.

Daisy I have been a vegan for 12 years and have sustained two healthy pregnancies and ample breast feeding production on a 100% vegan diet. My boys are 3 and 6 now, go to regular check ups and are perfectly healthy, normal, and happy. The trick is knowing what you're doing and eating a varied balanced diet. There is not just one formula for health and it is unfair for people to claim that just because some people don't do the diet correctly that it cannot be done correctly.

Jillian S. Book is very informative with nutritional info but I 100% agree with what you are saying!!

Laini Loved your review. Any expert that tells me to give up coffee gets ignored. I's the only vice I have, and I'm not giving it up!

Lauren I'm quite sure that the vulgarity is meant to be humorous. Whether or not it is found that way by the reader is left solely up to them and their own sense of humor. Veganism is a healthy lifestyle choice if done properly, as I am sure many vegans could attest. This book is not some kind of Bible; it contains the views of two women (out of how many vegans, exactly?) along with some shocking information regarding the meat, dairy, and egg industries. Please don't gauge the worth of veganism based on a single, short book.

Nikki Wilson I agree with your review. I have no problems with veganism or learning about the food industry. What I had problems with, in this book, was that it's misleading, there are misquoted out-of-context statements from their sources and the women are not professionally trained nutrition experts. It is as if they started Googling and wrote down what they saw that supported only their viewpoints and while they were Googling one decided to get some over-the-net degree. If my closest friend, who is herself a vegetarian AND certified nutritionist with the board of Nebraska working for our med center, guides people away from this book there is a good reason. This book is basically like crash diet 101 for idiots: here's some scary facts, here's how to mess up your metabolism by eating as little as possible and while your at it don't take medicine because Tylenol is scary. Give. Me. A. Break.

message 21: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Lizarraga I absolutely agree with you, and I couldn't even finish the book, huh! Couldn't get past the pig situation there, I was turned off from food for about two days, and even now I get these flashbacks of that damn book! I can not imagine finishing that book and ever eating again! So I refuse to read on. Great review!

message 22: by Shelley (new)

Shelley Thanks for the honesty! Thought about reading this, but I don't go for "model experts"!

Shevonne I'm only listening to the beginning of the audiobook, and I'm already annoyed as hell. Not sure I will finish it either.

Natali Bojanić I don't agree. You say that: "They further the stereotype that in order to be happy you have to be a size 0."

These are direct quotes from the book:
"But you are good enough, you do deserve it, and no one is thinking otherwise."
"Our insides are much more important than our outsides. So don’t you fucking dare measure your worth by the amount of attention or validation you get from men. It’s nice to be appreciated, but it is not a necessity. Love yourself and your looks."
"Don’t be insecure or competitive or feel threatened by women who are thinner or prettier than you. Be happy for them; it will make you look better. Smile a lot, give compliments out whenever you can, and be nice to everyone."

Keshia you nailed it! great review.

Jennifer l read this book & didn't see anything recommending people to eat as little as possible. They give suggestions on what to eat but not exact measurements so idk where the 700-800 calories a day recommendation is coming from?

message 27: by Nat (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nat This is an amazing Book!!!
If you think about your read you will realize that they make sense!! I went by the book for 5yrs. & felt fabulous! I looked like I did when I ran track in HS!! Awesome 👏

message 28: by Sarah (new) - rated it 1 star

Sarah I'm barely into the book and also noticed just how condescending the authors are. It is astounding! Plus the whole "if you're not a vegetarian" BS! I'll finish it (at this point) so I can write a more thorough review. But this drivel is what is wrong with the health and nutrition industry!

message 29: by Teal (new) - rated it 2 stars

Teal Veyre I also found the sample menus quite lacking, but Idk how you could calculate the daily calorie intake since they didn't give any serving sizes? They just say stuff like "veggie chili"-they don't say how much to eat. I do think those meal plans would leave people feeling weak, but there's no way to calculate calories without a serving size
