** spoiler alert ** Wow. I don't even know what to say. This book is disturbing, but I think there will be a lot to talk about at the book club.
I wasn't a fan of the style and the narration in the beginning. I understand that the author wanted the child's point of view, but it was very hard to read. If not for this being a book club book, I'm not sure I would have gotten past the first few chapters. But [Spoilers coming] once the escape plan started being hatched I was hooked. I cried several times throughout the book, especially when the mom tried to commit suicide.

K I wonder if I was more receptive to the child narrator because I listened on audio. The child's voice was done by a child, with adult interjections by adult actors. That may have been easier for me than reading it.

SaraK It took me a good while to get used to his tone and to read the way it would be spoken, I bet the audio is a different experience.

K I could see that. We're reading it in my book club too, and one of my book club members who'd already read it expressed doubts about how it would work on audio. But I actually think that in this case, listening to it on audio worked better for me than reading it visually would have.
