Eddie Watkins Sure, "fucking sucks" is a bit extreme, and some of what I read I really liked, but soon enough - maybe around page 100 - I realized the book was boring me. Other than the dull portrait of a brilliant sociopathic sexual predator and murderer, the emphasis on guilt (which I don't generally find interesting), the mostly uninspired prose, and the potentially interesting characters rendered uninteresting by the banality of their driving forces (mommy issues); there is a very interesting story buried somewhere in the bloat.

David HI, EDWARD!

"Fucking sucks"... that's like that one guy you know would say, right?

I've only read a small book of essays by Franzen and have no intention of changing that any time soon.

Eddie Watkins DK! Howdy!

Yes, his only critiques were "fucking great" and "fucking sucks". He's since been fired from my work, though, sadly.

I actually really liked his last two novels, but this one... pee-you!

lisa_emily that awful huh? ok- now I don't feel so bad missing him reading a few nights ago.

Eddie Watkins More very disappointing than awful. I am certain there are great sections in it - I really liked the first one set in a group house in Oakland - but there is just too much useless boring padding for me to read every word of it.

lisa_emily Kind of relieved that you took care this for me. Guess I will read his Krauss book and not worry that am missing anything by passing up this book. Read too many clunkers this year as it is.

Matthieu Ha, Eddie. Nice. I liked when Franzen tried to adopt that Iraqi war orphan, but his editor told him it was a bad idea.

Eddie Watkins That actually endeared him to me. Adopt an Iraqi war orphan to understand young people? That's just crazy! But I liked that he admitted it and that he wants so badly to understand, however misguided his methods might be.

Matthieu His editor cracks me up. Franzen seems to be a rather impulsive fellow...

Who is his editor- Is there a interview out there somewhere? I do remember the adoption thing- but I think I heard it in the Fresh Air interview.

Patrick Oh, THANK you for this absolution. I shall quote your reason for that one star.
