really liked it
bookshelves: 2020, mystery-thriller, classics, romance

I dread reading classics. Those boring uneventful prestigious novels that well I feel -as someone with a reputation of reading a lot- should have definitely read them. I hate reading books I’m supposed to read. Why is it difficult for me to read a novel that has been published before I was born? Books like Gone with the Wind, War and Peace, a Tale of Two Cities have been sitting on my shelves for years. Accumulating dust. I cannot bring myself to read beyond the first page.

Yet, every once in a while I come across a classic and realize that yes, truly, there is a reason why some are justly timeless. Rebecca is one of those. Enchanting writing and gripping story, it is superior to most love stories written today. Mind you, the romance is not the main story. It’s also a mystery with gothic vibes to it. It's a must-read for all Jane Eyre fans. I simply couldn’t put the book down once I managed to finish the first chapter.

Birte Amazing review! I want to read this and whenever someone who doesn't like to read classics likes them it's a big motivation😁

PinkAmy loves books, cats and naps I must be old, because when I read this as a teenager it want a classic.

Baba Agree... absolutely spot-on... classics are a chore; but some like this one are deserved of the label :)

MarilynW Wonderful review! I need to read this again although I'm often shocked when I reread books from decades ago and find they seem to have "changed"...or is is me that changed!?!? 😂

Albert Elnen Imagine reading Shakespesre. No one is alive now that was back then.

Lorna The idea of classics is ruined by school teachers and even universities. I prefer to think of them as tried-and-tested for entertainment value by many normal people. More often than not they are secretly raunchy or gory and a well-kept secret by po-faced academics.

Well, it’s shelved by 11k users on GR as a classic for me a classic is anything released before 1950 and popular 😅 I’m not sure of the standards, I should search that 🤔

Yep exactly! I wish I can filter them to the guaranteed good reads..

Ikr!! Reading a book as someone older always brings a new perspective because your life experience isn’t the same anymore!

I haven’t read anything by Shakespeare :) as a non native english speaker the old english scares me.. I’m hoping to read Hamlet though in 2021!

Yeah I agree :(
I always found most classics in my native language not very fun but the main problem for me is that we never had to read english classics at school (not even french, instead we read experts of those and relying on locally written ones which are simply not on the same level). So, I’m always afraid of not fully understanding the language used and grasping the hidden meaning, which should usually be very “deep. I need to get over this and maybe read some analysis of the book once I’m done, I suppose.

Meredith (Trying to catch up!) Yay! Glad you enjoyed this one too. I think I might have to do a reread soon!

I didn’t love Jane Eyre but it was still good. I enjoyed this one more I think not sure if because the writing is modern of the story itself.

Maliha Tabassum (back from hiatus) Tisha I read Jane Eyre when I was in 7th grade, after being tempted by an excerpt in one my textbooks. At the time I really rooted for Jane, loved the book with all my heart. The book has since been a favourite. Idk how i'll feel about it NOW. But I'll definitely check this book out nevertheless. I heard somewhere it has a psychological horror vibe! Do you think it really does?

I very much enjoyed Jane Eyre although I read it last year (but wasn’t in love with it like P&P). My taste hasn’t change since last year so nah I think you’d still enjoy it!
Rebecca has many similar aspects to Jane Eyre but mystery is more the focus of the story. I wouldn’t say horror but gothic and psychological in a way yes!

I highly recommend it tbh, especially since now it’s a netflix adaptation!

Regina Loved this review, Nicole! I agree, this one's a classic for good reason.

Christina I need to read this one again. Just watched the movie again. A classic.

Oh alright. Now I won't have to go into it with false expectations. I love psychological mystery, so I hope I end up loving it as much as you did!

Good to know about that! I'll definitely read the book before watching the adaptation.

Kat (Books are Comfort Food) Great review, Nicole. It’s a great story and I read the book a very long time ago and loved the movie as well. Some classics I will read and enjoy, but if I get one I don’t like, I will move on. So glad you enjoyed this.
