I seriously need a "Whoa!" or "WTF?!" shelf for these books. They are seriously in a league of their own when it comes to... well, everything. I just finished, and the last chapter (before the epilogue) literally (and I mean literally) had me reading with wide, disbelieving eyes. This, despite all that I've seen before in these books. And that's a lot.
I love these books, and I am mentally kicking myself for never having read them before. The characters are fantastic, so real they practically step off the page. The story is amazing, and holds nothing back, and keeps me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. It's a testament to how good these are that I feel almost too nervous to read them. I'm afraid of what the next page turn will bring... who will enter into the story - and who might leave it.
This series is a story for story lovers. If you haven't read them, I highly recommend it.
Excuse me while I go hump GRRM's leg for writing this series.

Thanks Stephen. :)
How did you like the audio? When I started these, I listened to a sample of A Game of Thrones, but I didn't care for the reader much. Likely he'd have grown on me, but I didn't want to take the chance on fudging up my first experience with these... LOL

Becky, I can not recommend the audio versions highly enough. I thought they were AMAZING. I have only listened to the first 3 and they were read by Roy Dotrice. The fourth book, A Feast for Crows, is read by John Lee and I own it but haven't listened to it because I have been waiting for the next book to be released. However, I have heard John Lee read before and he is one of my favorites so I assume I will love it.

I think it was still a good choice to read these - I'd have been really lost if I wasn't able to re-read sections, I think!

dotrice is great, but i'd suggest listening to the books using your ipod's "faster" playback setting. dotrice talks... so... slowly that even on the faster setting, he sounds like he is speaking at a totally reasonable (perhaps even slightly slow) pace. this is the series that got me listening to every book on the faster setting. it also saves you 20 percent of the time!
