She also wrote The Haunting of Hill House which is supposed to be very good.
And I'd never heard of her. :( I might just go whole-hog and read this omnibus edition to get the floor-joist points: Novels and Stories. Plus, Joyce Carol Oates is the editor!
I just read a library copy of The Haunting of Hill House yesterday. It was great! I'm still thinking about all the different parts that were left unexplained. If you like it, I recommend The Red Tree by Caitlin Kiernan.

Now that I've finished it, you should totally read this, Alex. There's a lot that fits with the collective behavior theme.
I forgot to say before that if you read this book with this cover (this edition, etc.) DO NOT READ THE INTRODUCTION. It is 100% demonstrably wrong and idiotic and will start you off badly. You can read it and get pissed at the idiot who wrote it afterward.
