Imi Oh no! I had many problems with the treatment of women in the first 2 books and I'll be so upset if that's also the case with this one (or are you saying it's even worse?). Might be time I gave up with this series...

Kirsty I've only read the first one, and was fine with the women in it (I mean, it's not great, but I didn't find it hugely problematic). But this one. My god. SO MANY abused and murdered women, gleefully and explicitly tortured in front of us. There's hardly a woman in this book who isn't abused by a man. And there's not even any point being made with the violence against women (as with, say, Girl With the Dragon Tattoo). If you do read it, I'd be interested to know your thoughts.

Imi The second one was definitely more problematic than the first. I really didn't like the ending and the treatment of one female character in particular. It's such a shame because they're really fun reads on whole, but the ending of Silkworm really made me question whether I wanted to continue with the series. I was hoping for some improvement in this book, but this sounds terrible. Why, JK, why?

Kirsty I'm genuinely shocked that a woman wrote it. There's so much disgust and hatred for women in the chapters from the killer's perspective.

Tasha Noemi I don't think that makes the book misoginistic at all! If anything, it was realistic ... most men that murder and abuse women ARE very sexist, woman-hating people. I think if anything, JKR was drawing attention to these issues and getting her readers to care. There is a difference between a book being misogynistic in itself, and a book featuring misogynistic characters.

Kelly I agree with Tasha. There is a lot of gruesome violence against women in this book, yet none of it is prurient or gratuitous; rather, it's an indictment of our culture of misogyny and the violence borne out of it. Alongside the violence, however, is also several depictions of "victimhood" -- from Kelsey, desperately wishing to become a victim of a tragedy for attention's sake, to Robin, who went beyond victimhood to true empowerment, physically, mentally and emotionally. I think it's quite deftly done.

Natalie Kapuler jesus, yes. i thought i was tripping scrolling through all the glowing reviews. it is VILE. i re- edited my own review a dozen times just because it pains me so to critisize her. but what, what is this?! hopefully when people that dont use "hupplepuff" in their names will read it, as i assume it was readen so far by mostly captive audience, the rankings and reviews will level off. i would hate for a casual reader to pick it up based on these reviews. it is truely awful.

Linda Why are you shocked that a murder mystery would be violent? Why are you shocked that a murderer might hate women? That happens. Quit reading murder mysteries if you are so sensitive. Great book. I cannot wait for the next one.

I could not agree more. More than once since I've started reading the serie, I've been shocked at the way Rowling depicts women in her books.

THANK YOU! Honestly, all these reviews about people getting upset that "it's too voilent". Like, what did you exepect? The real world is not unicorns and rainbows. There are people out there who are actually like this. People who kill for sport, who like torture, and who hate women, due to their mysogenic nature. If anything, this is pretty realistic to what the worst criminals are like. Like Linda said, stop reading murder mysteries if you're this sensitive, it's not for you.

Reanne The misogyny of this series is part of why I've given up on it as well. I really expect more from a woman, especially one as supposedly progressive as Rowling.

Keith hmm ... so men who hate women don't exist if we don't write about them? Writing a murder mystery with realistic characters doesn't make the author 'misogynistic'.

Randy Should the author or publisher have issued you a trigger warning? Get a life.
