Prior to reading this, a friend of mine told me she stayed up til 4 o'clock in the morning just to finish this-obviously the signs of a goodread! When I opened the book and reviewed the first couple of pages, I was not sure if I would like it due to the syntax, but decided to give it a shot anyways since I was only reading MLS texts! Boy, am I glad I did.
Jack, a 4-just-turned-5-year-old boy, is encompassed in a world that consists of friends like Rug, Bed, Dylan, Dora, TV, etc., and shares the space of an old shed with Ma. Old Nick comes in occasionally to drop of items from Ma's list and Sunday Treats, but really never actually sees him because Jack is in Wardrobe while Nick is there. Then one day, Ma comes up with the Great Escape.
While reading about Old Nick, I was torn between loving and hating this book. Characters like that make me hate the world, but Jack brought out the wonderful things I tend to overlook in the day-drops of rain, helicopter seeds, even the company of more than just one person. Not just that, but reading an adult book through the eyes of a 5-year-old is just refreshing. Normally when I read about cases similar to this where a girl is abducted by an old man and found 30 years later by police, the people coming to the other side of their abduction don't recognize that world. That's part of what made this book slightly different from the news stories that rip my heart out because Ma is hidden for 7 years, which is still an incredibly long time to be locked up and go to hell and back. Seeing how Jack is able to go from a world so small and transition to Outside is incredible. Whether or not it would be an accurate depiction, that I do not know. EIther way, I loved this book and would recommend it to others. Would it be worth purchasing? Yeah, maybe, but I picked this one up at my library on our Express shelf.
