it was amazing
bookshelves: family-dynamics, magical-realism, gorgeous-covers

I read this short masterpiece ages ago, but it only recently resurfaced in my mind, like a forgotten dream. It's a tense drama of murder foretold, written in the magical realism style for which Columbian novelist, Marquez, was lionised.
I really need to read it again to reacquaint myself with its succulent excellence.
(Ditto, Don Quixote, and so many other exquisitely-written novels that are now consigned to the backroom of my cluttered mind).

Cheri I haven't read anything by him since I read Love in the Time of Cholera, which I loved, but it's still the only one of his I've read. I am tempted by your lovely review, Kevin!

Thank you, Cheri.
I ADORE Marquez. My favourite would have to be One Hundred Years of Solitude, which is also on your wishlist. : )

Thanks, Kimber! Most kind. And you Kansas girls are so polite. I love it!

Petra in Tokyo I loved this book. I love all GGM 's books. I like coming across reviews of them because it reminds me of them. :-)

Thank you, Petra. : )
I adore Márquez. He was one of my biggest influences; I was spellbound the first time I read One Hundred Years of Solitude. That masterpiece is one of my top five.

I got lost in it too, another world. But it's not my favourite GGM. I love Memories of My Melancholy Whores, it has the honesty of confession, of autobiography, although it's neither. My joint no. 2 are I also love Innocent Erendira and Other Stories and Love in the Time of Cholera. All his other books are 0.1 beneath these three, lol. He was a genius writer.

I binge-read them all back in the eighties and nineties, Petra, and I totally agree that he was a genius writer.
He, Dickens and Salman Rushdie are my three favourites. : )

Petra in Tokyo I can't stand Dickens. He's my absolute bete noir. Salman Rushdie - I love some of his books, like others, others bore me... I don't know who my favourite authors, it changes all the time, but GGM certainly. For fiction, probably Trollope as well and Saramago. And Zola, always Zola.

I read Trollope in my teens and have watched a Zola play. Shamefully, I haven't read anything by Saramago. : (

That's not shameful, that's wonderful! Now you have so much to look forward to. I would suggest that you listen to Saramago rather than read it unless you have an endless tolerance for lack of punctuation and run on sentences and paragraphs that can go on for pages.

Zola - Nana is one of the most perfect French novels ever written. It is the usual trope, beautiful woman from a poor background exploits her looks and the inevitable downfall. But Zola does it better than anyone. It's almost Russian in its depth, without the inevitable lecturing and social commentary and excess verbiage.

I've been writing solidly for ten hours a day for the past two months, and therefore haven't read at all, so I shan't get to Saramago anytime soon.
I shall bear him in mind though, although I'm definitely not a fan of run-on sentences and punctuation wastelands.

Vishakha Another lovely review, Kevin! I love your description of "succulent excellence" and I need to reacquaint myself with it because I did not appreciate it the first time around.
