Fascinating novella by a wonderful writer. Ethan Frome is trapped - in a cold winter and a cold marriage. When love presents itself, he is desperate to change his circumstances. The tension and atmosphere Wharton creates in such a short piece, is impressive. Perhaps a little high on the melodrama (view spoiler) ... but otherwise, this piece has depth, and made me think.

Debra I have read House of Mirth and loved it, and now will check this one out too.

Robin I haven't read "Mirth", but loved "Age of Innocence". She's great!

Robin Btw, you can get this book free on iBooks... It's public domain I believe.

Debra Just downloaded...thanks!

Cheri Wonderful, Robin, I have to agree with you on your spoiler, it wouldn't ever have occurred to me, either. I'm glad to see that you loved her "Age of Innocence," too.

Hey Cheri. Thank you! I've been thinking it's time to re-read this (WHY can't I forfeit sleep - or even better, work - to make more time for the books I want to read??), but I haven't been able to squeeze it in. It's a really powerful story that I feel I could learn from, in my writing life.

I did love Age of Innocence - another one I've been meaning to re-read for a while now. House of Mirth was excellent, too. Edith Wharton was so good!

Laysee I agree that this sad story has depth, Robin. You captured the essence of this book in just a few lines. Good job!

You're very kind, Laysee! It's one of my earlier reviews - almost prehistoric :D I'm sure one day I will revisit this piece, it has a haunting quality that has stayed with me.
