really liked it
bookshelves: young-adult, 2011

I didn't think I'd be so gripped by this book but the author captures the pains and troubles of everyday high school life with such honesty and raw emotion that I couldn't help recognising half the characters from my own high school days. There's Rachel, the ex best friend who's had a personality transplant over the summer... Heather, the temporary friend who's just waiting to be snapped up by a cooler clique... and, of course, the protagonist who doesn't quite fit in anywhere.

The beauty of this novel is that it works well alone without the much darker and more important story behind it. But, that being said, it also serves as a very sad and moving voice for rape victims, particularly for those who feel at fault, or scared and embarrassed by what happened. It was a quick, accessible read, but it's also the kind that plays on your mind long after finishing it.

A. Figaro It's not just every-f***ing-day high school. It's being raped. It's loosing all your best friends. It's feeling like shit every single day. And it's nearly killing yourself to escape the endless fear and loneliness.

This is just a small bit of depression.

Scott T McCall I love your reviews! They are very helpful, I just wrote a short and sweet review on this book that I enjoyed as much as you do!

Andrew Hunter I just added this book to my TBR list and my Kindle Wishlist, and I noticed your review was used word for word by "Dylan O." It was in 2016, so I'm not sure it matters much, but I thought it was weird.

carinne Awesome review. I need to do a reread I was so young when I read this.

Emily May Kimberly wrote: "I read this book waaay back in high school and it has stood the test of time really well. I read it again recently and was just as moved as I was when I was a teenager. Anderson is such a talented ..."

I actually reviewed this back in 2011! I can't believe it's been so long. I'm sort of feeling like I should do a reread along with reading Shout.

Eden Anderson's Winter Girls is also written in a similar style! I really enjoyed this novel as well :)

Jeffrey Gao High School was great!

Carmen Great review.

marinersapartmentcomplex Speak. Exemplifying the struggle of people not understanding your side of a story. I truly understand Melinda's pain throughout the novel. Anderson's style of writing makes you feel a special connection to the character in all of her books. Having insight on Melinda's feelings on the inside make me feel in-linked with her mind. This book might be the greatest I have ever read.
