really liked it
bookshelves: classics, four-star-fiction, all-fiction

Doing a quick re-read of this one, to see if it's as good as I remember it being. :)

Done! And yep, it still holds up to my original rating on the second time through. I actually got a lot more out of it on the re-read. Makes me wonder what other books I should go back to.

Charisse Wow - I read this in high school... I remember my best friend insisting I read it... (I can't remember details other than I liked it) I'm sure I missed the subtleties as well!!!

Jeanette (Ms. Feisty) Heck, Charisse, I only read it 4 or 5 years ago and barely remembered anything except that I really liked it.

Julie I loved this one too, though it's been...15 years?...I remember thinking that Franny's theological/intellectual meltdown and reawakening turned the image of the innocent, Bobby Socks, vanilla milkshake 1950's on its head. Made me wish I could have experienced Beat Generation New York City...think I'd look good in a black beret ;)

Franny's a head case for sure. She won't even eat chicken soup, for pity's sake!
It's not too late for that black beret. You could make it tres chic in Snoose Junction. :)

I think if you read it you'll see why I couldn't quite go with 5 stars. It's a very enjoyable read, but there are places where it falters, and places where Salinger goes on just a little longer than he should. (Example: The old letter Zooey is reading while sitting in the bathtub. Too long and not essential to the story.) There are parts of the book that almost make it seem like a work in progress rather than a finished product, but overall very well written. :)
Oh, and no, the dialogue is most definitely not my reason for deducting a star. The dialogue is what defines the characters and tells the story.
