Depending on where you began the story, it was about the Raven King. About friendship. About magic and magicians. About Blue, her raven boys and their quest. About something more.
I wanted The Raven King to be a lot of things and at the same time I wanted it to be none of them. In the end, I think, I got both what I wanted and what I didn't want. Want is a relative concept anyway.
Read this review keeping in mind there are minor spoilers in it, the major ones are hidden, but I still recommend you to read it only if you finished the book.
Now I feel devastated. The Raven Cycle gave me a lot: friends, lines to think about at night, concepts to discuss, theories to make, tears to shed. The difference between a good book and a memorable one is that the latter makes you both feel and think. The Raven King made me feel a lot. It made me think even more.
Once upon a time there was a boy who had forgotten how many times he had been told he was destined for greatness. He was also destined to die.
The boy's name was Gansey. Richard Gansey III was the latter kind of king.
What did Gansey want? To find Glendower, to save Noah, to kiss Blue, to help Ronan finish Aglionby, not to hurt Adam's feelings, to kiss Blue just one time, not to die.
Stiefvater, please, I just want
There also was a girl who had forgotten how many times she'd been told she would kill her true love.
The girl's name was Blue. Blue Sargent was a hypocrite, but at least it was scrawled in her own handwriting.
What did Blue want? To belong, to help Noah, to kiss Gansey, to be sure Maura was happy, not to hurt Adam's feelings, to kiss Gansey just one time, not to let him die, something more.
Stiefvater, please, I just want
There was a boy who had forgotten how many times he wanted to feel awake when his eyes were open.
The boy's name was Adam. Adam Parrish was an unfathomable and a practical creature.
What did Adam want? Freedom, to be understood, to be known, to be wantable, not to care about his resources, to get to the college, not to be afraid of his father, to find peace, not to let Gansey die.
Stiefvater, please, I just want
There also was a boy who had forgotten how many times he wasn't sure if there was a line between dream and reality.
The boy's name was Ronan. Ronan Lynch was dreamer of dreams, fighter of men, skipper of classes.
What did Ronan want? To know that Matthew was safe, to have a mother, to dream, to make Adam smile, to live at Barns, not to finish Aglionby.
Stiefvater, please, I just want
There was a boy who had forgotten how many times he'd seen his own death.
The boy's name was Noah. Noah Czerny was dead and knew much more than people gave him credit for.
What did Noah want? To be alive, to stop suffering, to stay a little bit longer, not to steal energy from Blue, not to let Gansey die.
Stiefvater, please, I just want
Once upon a time, long before Gansey, Blue, Adam, Ronan and Noah lived, there had been a king. The king's name was Glendower. Owen Glendower wasn't the same kind of king Gansey was, but even after so many years he led Richard Gansey III somewhere, he gave him a purpose.
(view spoiler)
Maggie Stiefvater is the same kind of king as Gansey. She led me, gave me a purpose. She introduced Ronan to me. He taught me to dream big, to dream about impossible things. She introduced Adam to me. He taught me it was okay to ask for help sometimes. She introduced Noah to me. He taught me it was okay just to be there and not to say anything if you couldn't find any words. She introduced Blue to me. She taught me to follow my heart no matter what. She intoduced Gansey to me. He taught me to live my dreams, to pursue my goals, to never give up. He taught me it was okay to be afraid sometimes.
Maggie Stiefvater taught me too. She taught me to write my own story the way I want. Thank you for this wonderful emotional journey, Maggie. I'm sure that's not all there is. There always is something more.
P.S: Thank you, my girls Nastassja, Katerina and Vera for buddy reading it with me. The ride on this rollercoaster wouldn't be the same without you. Thank you, Chelsea, for introducing this cycle to me. It gave me much more than it took after all. Thank you, Ana and Arantxa, for listening to my theories I wrote at night and discussing all the crazy ideas we had. It was a wonderful experience.

He was a book, and he was holding his final pages, and he wanted to get to the end to find out how it went, and he didn't want it to be over.

The Gray Man liked kings.
He liked official kings, the sorts who had the title and crown and all that, but he also liked unofficial kings, who ruled and led and stewarded without any noble bloodline or proper throne.

In a different world, she could have been friends with people like Henry for her entire teen years. But in this world, she stayed in Henrietta and watched people like that move away.
The girl's name was Blue. Blue Sargent was a hypocrite, but at least it was scrawled in her own handwriting.

His fingers were spread on the asphalt and his feet braced like a runner waiting for the starting shot. Three tarot cards splayed before him. He’d taken one of the floor mats out of the car to crouch on to keep from dirtying his uniform trousers.

It was such a throwaway sound now, that laugh. An easy one that said it could be spent so easily because there were more where that one came from. The wound was healing against all odds; the victim would make it after all.
The boy's name was Ronan. Ronan Lynch was dreamer of dreams, fighter of men, skipper of classes.

Joined was perhaps the wrong verb. Manifested was better. The phrase trick of the light was even more superior. Trick of the mind was the best.

Anyway, you made me read this series and I don't regret reading it. so thank youuuu! These

I guess it will go

I'm happy I'm not the only one with these feelings, Sarah! I'm writing a bigger review to explain all the things I did and didn't like, but for now, yes, these are raw emotions :)

You already now about the moments I agree with you and the ones I disagree ;)
The humor though: ...not to finish Aglionby - ahahaha, I blinked a few times at this phrase, not comprehending what the hell?! But then I remembered it's Ronan and well, Ronan is Ronan :D
Glendower being inside a deer would make much more sense <---- Seriously? :D

I read it as 'hateful' at the beginning and was exactly in the same "what the hell?!" state hahaha. I actually felt kind of "oh, it deserves 100 out of 5"... before I got to the burn-it-with-fire part. Thank you!
Yeah, I still have some of your messages to read, so I guess this discussion will be loooong. But this book deserves to be discussed.
As for Ronan: well, since I tried to follow Adam's "wants getting smaller".. I guess after all Not-Finishing-Aglionby was Ronan's low priority haha
I AM serious actually!

I read it as 'hateful' at the beginning and was exactly in the same "what the hell?!" state hahaha. I actually felt kind of "oh, it deserves 100 out of 5"... before I got to the burn-it-w..."
I am all in for long discussions)
In what part of deer would you place Glendower, I wonder... :P

I read it as 'hateful' at the beginning and was exactly in the same "what the hell?!" state hahaha. I actually felt kind of "oh, it deserves 100 out of 5"... before I got to..."
Okay, I got your perverted personality at that you-know-what-moment-I'm-referring-to, Nastja..

Ronan is my favorite too
(view spoiler)

Yes, yes,I am sorry for being such a dick (oops) :P

You know, right, that in my book everyone will die? hahaha
Thank you! I haven't written reviews for the previous books and I had so many thoughts in my head that I just had to write such a long review. Who knows, maybe one day;)
Hahaha, OH THOSE THEORIES, my god. Some of them were kind of ridiculous, but I'M NOT ASHAMED OKAY
Exactly, the best part about this series

Then you would give me what this book didn't (view spoiler) but you're right haha...
"Gansey is Glendower!"
"Maybe Gansey is not even Blue's true love!"
"ADAM IS IN LOVE WITH GANSEY"
ohh so sweet summer children

Oh, you can totally count on with this haha
Hahaha STOOOP (view spoiler)

I miss them already.

I miss them already."
Thank you so much!
I miss them too, I just can't let it go.

If I haven't read TRK already I'd actually say that theory makes sense lol.
AND YES, WHERE IS THE FANART?? haha

(view spoiler)

Thank you, Vera!

Oh don't even get me started on that. Since the beggining of this series I think we all have known that these characters are definitely not 100% straight (not only Ronan or Adam) throughout the series there's a lot of evidence to back up this statement. But that gayness only was amplified +200% in this book (view spoiler)

Hmm... I don't really see any other characters being not 100% straight, tbh, their friendship is just of the other kind than we can usually see in real life, I guess. All of the characters went through a lot of shit and they really care about each other, for me these relationships they have just look really fragile. I mean Adam was looking at Gansey with some kind of admiration from the very first book, he was idolizing him. Adam did look at Ronan with a different kind of glance. As for Gansey, he looked at Adam with some kind of admiration as well: the way Adam was going against the stream that was his shitty life in the trailer park, the way he worked all day and night to pay his bills, to study (in contrast with Ronan, who skipped classes easily). Gansey never knew what having no money really was, so he looked up to Adam the way Adam looked up to him. For me it's just the highest level of friendship they have.

Wonderful review, Julia! Glad you enjoyed this one. You described everyone perfectly!

Sorry for the "Depending.." (I'll just stop here, okay?), though, haha, don't scream!
Thank you! I both did and didn't, but that's, I guess, is a good thing, since it gave me a lot of things to think

Oh I don't necessarily meant that they're in love with one another, but wait... What am I saying? they totally are, that's literally one of the most famous quotes in the series.
What I'm saying is that... well, I don't even know how to explain it, it's like I like to give their sexuality some insight and make my own conclusions, I guess (?) everyone is going to perceive it differently and I guess I'm just heavily influenced by tumblr so I tend to make the same conclusion literally always

I guess after reading TRK everyone wants Henry's robobee, it'd be literally a world saving invention.
Yeah, I got what you were saying, I think it really depends on perception, like I don't really need to know more about characters' sexuality than the author told me. But you know, I wasn't 100% sure if there was anything between Adam and Ronan even after reading TDT, so I'm not the person to ask hahaha, but now I can't stop looking for Pynch arts I haven't seen yet.

Thank you, Simona!
I still haven't fully come to terms with all that bitterness I feel too (view spoiler) , and yes, the ending is indeed anticlimactic. When I was writing the "I got what I wanted" part I was like "Oh, Julia, come on, this book deserves 100 out of 5 at least for the characters' growth!", but then I started to think about the "And what was that?" part, and the more I wrote the more bitter I felt. I still have a lot of issues with the way it ended, but maybe I'll eventually come to terms with it too

Adam and Lynches parts made cryyy. And Gansey's too.
Agreed about Piper and Neeve. Seems like they were there only to wake up the demon (view spoiler)
Artemus! I just can't help my wonder about his relationship with Maura. Was he different back then? Or she had to flush out him every time they were going to the date?
Oh, you met tree-lights before? I didn't. I thought this is the same thing as druids are.
About Henry and his "c'mon magicians!". (view spoiler)
ps: thank you for thanking me and I thank you too (three thanks in one sentence, 'cause 3 is a good number!)))

Adam and Lynches parts made cryyy. And Gansey's too.
Agreed about Piper and Neeve..."
Thanks, Kat!
Lynches and Parrish were totally diamonds of TRK!
I don't really care about Artemus haha, every time people say "What could possibly happen to him?? How's he and Maura?" I'm like "nah, don't care" :D I don't know, I guess I really can't care less.
As for tree-lights, I'm pretty sure I did, 'cause the concept doesn't sound like a new one for me, but ugh, that was an odd thing.

Thank you, Nina! I guess it's the one I enjoyed writing the most:)

I was pissed at that ending, how the whole search for that king guy led up to absolutely nothing and that crab thing popping out of nowhere that was supposed to be so terrifying. Like, Please. The boys are worth holding on to though. Especially Ronan <3

Oh, Ronan.. Can't wait to see more of him!
