I read Nerve for two reasons and two reasons only: The cover, because it's oddly beautiful, and because it's becoming a movie with Dave Franco. I really like him so I wanted to pick this up before September when it's set to be released. That being said I don't know if it was worth it. Nerve ggot on my last one. It was so freaking boring! This book is about a live action truth or dare game (without the truth part), where teens can sign up and the more "extreme" the dares the better the prizes.

**warning if you just saw the trailer for this movie. And think "ehhhhh this doesn't look so bad", you're wrong. NOTHING that happens in the trailer happens in this book. Not a single thing... You've been warned.**

First off I had absolutely no connection to either one of our leads. Vee is one of the most annoying female protagonists I've ever encountered. She's not only annoying, she's also both childish and whiny. There wasn't anything she couldn't find a reason to complain about. She drags on and complains about her home life, school life, friends, boys, and mostly the game SHE SIGNED UP FOR! I also struggled connecting with her because of her reason for signing up for the game was so slack, a freaking boy. Like come on?!? Seriously? Then she gets into the game and is the biggest baby ever about it. The preliminary dares are so easy that I found it very hard to believe anyone would be so torn up about it. Like one of them, she has to walk into a coffee shop, convince a guy to buy her coffee, close her eyes, and sing 99 bottles, and then she cries. Why? Why are you crying?! I just don't understand. She cries most of the dares and a lot of them are just simple things like that. I also found the prizes she requested and that the game would give dumb and unbelievable. Plus her constant act of screaming at the cameras ``someone call 911" drove me insane. When the Nerve screen says "time to shut it Vee" I about died laughing, because it was exactly how I felt too.

Oh, and the other thing she kept doing that irked me was when she would ask "omg how does this game know so much about me? Did they ask all my friends or something?" no hooker, they looked it up on your stupid facebook site thingy!!! How dumb can you be? You post your whole life on it. How did you not know? On top of all this Vee is constantly in the state of being grounded and all her "friends" think it's because of her grades, but her best friend knows it's for something else... When we find out why all I could think is "why the F would your parents ground you for this!!! What terrible parenting!". There's a million other ways to handle a situation like this and grounding isn't one of them. Ugh.

Now on to Ian. He turns out to be Vee's live rounds partner. Ian is supposed to be this mysterious-edgy-dreamy-good bad boy, and I just didn't buy into it. Plus his "bad" background story is never fully answered. That lack of Ian information made me laugh at the thought of these two being romantic interests. Their romance wasn't at all convincing. It's kind of hard to explain, but it's just not believable. When they would be all cutesy with one another I just didn't fall for it. It's kind of like they were both there so why not just make them be together. No real reason for it, just because. I would have been happier if they were just teammates and weren't thrown into being something more. As far as side characters, well they were awful. I never in a thousand years would think that teens would be this nasty and vile to each other. Maybe one, but several, nah. I hated how her "friends" were also so conveniently thrown into the mix. Why not Ian's friends? Why not any of the other players? I was also a bit sad when there wasn't a single side character I could even kind of like. I live for side characters and it's clear they can make or break a story, they broke it.

Nerve's plot promised us a fast paced, action packed book for fans of The Hunger Games... Really tired of books not like The Hunger Games being compared to the The Hunger Games. When Nerve started with an action packed cliff hanging prologue I was really excited to get answers for what the heck was happening... Gonna warn you after you're done with the book it'll hit you that the prologue was pointless and is never answered (or did I miss something when I dozed off for a few minutes?). After the odd boring start to the book I had hopes that things would pick up, but once the dares started and we see what they are I lost all faith. The dares are one boring event after another. I was hoping things would get crazy and would be more off the wall events like Lauren Oliver's Panic, but nope.

At one point when one of the dares actually starts getting insane, and there starts to be a lot of build up, and the suspense is finally happening... it just drops off and the payoff is just this messy sloppy thrown together ending. And God is this ending so unsatisfying.

I didn't have high expectations going into Nerve, but I was still hoping to get something... turns out I just gave it a bunch of time and got nothing in return.

Hersh Sorry this didn't work out for you. Nice review.

message 2: by Xylina (new)

Xylina Diaz How funny I just saw the trailer for this movie last night and I told my husband it looked good. I had no idea it was a book. I doubt I'll read though based on your review of it.

Angela Link me girl!!!!!

Angela Nm saw it. Just a warning not a single thing from that trailer happens in the book. NOT A SINGLE THING

message 5: by Trish (new)

Trish that trailer went from rom/com to suspense/thriller in like 0.2 seconds and it seems kinda cool but i can see how it would translate better on the big screen (all the stunts/dares look super over the top and dramatic) than on paper.

Angela Not a single dare that's in the trailer is in the book. Which I think is a good thing.

message 7: by Trish (new)

Trish that's so funny. I love Dave Franco (he's so dreamy) and this may be a rare case where the movie is better than the book lol.

Angela Oh I have no doubt about that. The book was all over the place and had no humor. The movie looks like it flows better and is silly.

message 9: by Avery (new) - added it

Avery oh my god I totally agree. It actually didn't occur to me how boring the book really was until after I read your review. The trailer looks sooo much better, I'm excited for that. The book seemed like a cool concept but all the dares were incredibly boring and honestly pretty weird. I usually look for a strong main character and cute guy to go with her and I thought this book would have just that. I was wrong. Vee was incredibly annoying and obnoxious. I find it hard to believe that someone can shed that many tears or have parents that would ground them for something like that. This review is great and completely represents the book accurately. I'm still looking forward to the movie though

z ⋆˙⟡♡ I agree! Like, completely agree! I wish I didn't watch the trailer first before getting into this book. Hopefully, the movie would be way better.

Angela I'm excited to see the movie even though I still feel like it'll be so bad good

Miranda Have you seen one movie that is exactly like the book? I mean there are some movies that are close to the book but they leave out some stuff. And then there are the movies that have nothing to do with anything that happened in the book. So you can't judge a book based on the movie trailer for it. And I honestly don't think that her parents grounded her for that but for more of to keep an eye on her. Vee is not annoying when you understand her side of things. You have to see it through her eyes.

Angela She made me wanna barf! Ta each their own

message 14: by Suz (new) - rated it 1 star

Suz Wow your review is totally spot on to how i felt abt this book. Like you i only picked this book up after learning it's being made into a movie with dave franco. I can't believe this got made into a movie!!! I can think if soooo many other books that deserve it more, cinder and dustlands for example. Vee was just so dumb and whiny, i gave up reading halfway through

message 15: by Heather._. (new)

Heather._. im sorry this book was bad for you but that was harsh and mean and im seeing people comments saying they wont read it cause of this review and that stupid cause it was a great book and just because one person didn't like it doesn't mean you just give up on a book
AND ALSO VEE IS A TEENAGER WE COMPLAIN ABOUT STUFF
p.s love dave franco cant wait to see the movie

Vanya Meyer Ok my gosh I was reading through your review and just waiting for you to mention her parents grounding her for the "incident". Let me just say I thought the same thing! I was thinking "They grounded her for this?! What?!" That pissed me off. That's terrible parenting. I'm sorry but fuck them.

I also agree with Ian's background story. It drove me nuts it wasn't fully answered. It was brought up FINALLY and then it was never mentioned. Ever. Again.
Which seriously????

As for the romance thing, it kind of annoyed me but, hey, I'm not one that's all for a random "hey I just met you but let's get all mushy and start a big romance scenario!" Thing in books. I hate it.

Also for the other players, I wished the entire time that Vee would have shot Ty or Mickie. They annoyed the Hell out of me.

Brittany Love your review! I saw the trailer for the movie and I was like "Damn I wonder if its a book because it looks sooooo good". Then I picked up the book at my library and it was horrible.

Your review is so spot on!!

This review reads my mind! You summed it up perfectly!

message 19: by Stef (new) - rated it 3 stars

Stef These are basically the same things that I have to say about the book. I hope the movie is better.

message 20: by Tara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tara This is definitely not what I thought of the book, I think you are misinterpreting this story's plot line. This is supposed to be showing how things that people do can escalate quickly. Of course the first challenges are easy, for one, Vee tried to pick one of the easier ones, and also, the point of the book was to show how something seemingly bad could escalate. Vee was a "whiny" person because the author was demonstrating how someone who is pretty conservative could get into a huge mess like this. I personally think you got the wrong message from this book and that is a loss for you.

message 21: by Stef (new) - rated it 3 stars

Stef Eleanor wrote: "This is actually a VERY good book. I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy it but that is a loss for you. If you didn't enjoy this book then I am very sorry for your loss. This book was about a shy girl wh..."

Hey Eleanor, people are allowed to have different opinions. No need to call anyone judgmental.

message 22: by Stef (new) - rated it 3 stars

Stef Thanks for your apology, I agree that it was a bit overboard

Priscilla Michaels Yeah, I couldn't connect with Vee either... Something that also bothered me about this book is when Sydney has bruises form Matthew holding her so tight. Like, what?
Also, the ending did feel kind of thrown together. I felt like Vee was overreacting. I understand her being scared but for some reason I just couldn't relate with her about it. The more reviews I read, the less I like this book because someone will mention something else that I forgot about. Maybe if I would have read it at a younger age, I would have enjoyed it more. But at 17, it just annoys me.
But, I read it for my friend so I could go see the movie with her. I think this is going to be one of those rare moments where the movie is better than the book.

message 24: by Karen (new)

Karen G Damn, guess I'll wait for the movie then, lol.

Angela Everyone has their own review style this is mine. If you don't like it that's okay. There are tons of other reviewers to follow. I love people who review like I do an go hard and don't hold back. I hate this book and clearly my review showed it. I have respect for every author and what they do. But doesn't mean I have to like everything. I got what the book was trying to do, but it tried and didn't succeeded. Just because a book had a message to tell doesn't mean that it should be given a rating just because it had a good idea. It has to have a good idea. A good message, and then be able to showcase it and blow our minds.

I agree this will probably make a better movie than book.

jossibell Lema Def my first thought was " is so different from the movie trailer" and yep it kind of bored me.

message 27: by Jade (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jade Wagner I saw the movie last night and it is completely different from the book. Like the only thing similar was the concept and some of the characters but almost everything was different.

Angela Was the movie good????

message 29: by raxhelmaloney (new)

raxhelmaloney I saw the movie and it was actually really good, so I'd suggest watching it. I don't know if the book is any good but the movie is worth a shot for sure!

Tanya I saw the movie it's so much better than the book

message 31: by katkatkat (new)

katkatkat This is so funny!! I loved your review.

message 32: by Kiera (new)

Kiera Wow, I'm glad I didn't read the book. I saw the movie yesterday and I thought it was fantasic

Elizabeth I picked up the book because I thought the trailer was intriguing, but I had the exact same thoughts towards the book.

message 34: by Moe (new) - rated it 1 star

Moe Adelson Girl, you took the words right out of my mouth and managed to make me laugh! This was one of the most disappointing books i have ever read

message 35: by Lee (new)

Lee OMG I had forgotten the prologue entirely until I read your review. What is with that? What is with this book?!?! So much potential, just wasted. The movie may actually be better for once.

Jennifer Spoiler warning

Thank you for this review. I w was going to write one but you said everything I wanted too. Also, the way she just so easily forgives her guy friend really infuriated me. Forgiveness us good and all but he almost got her killed!!!!-

Angela I was actually surprised at how much I liked the movie

RomanceBookVixen Sorry this one didn't work for you :-(

Christina Mantelet I am so agree with. But I watched the movie first. And honestly, the movie is so impressive and awesome, that the book is just too boring if you compare.

So go watch the movie because it's more clever and thrilling!
The story and the "Dare" are completely different !

Katlyn Ellis spoiler alert

I haven't finished the book yet but I think the prologue is referring to the previous grand prize winner. Tommy briefly mentions about the grand prize winner last time before the line goes dead but like I said I have yet to finish the book yet

message 41: by Earu (new)

Earu Thanks for the good review. I watched the movie yesterday and bc it was amazing inho I thought about reading the book. Seems as if some adaptations actually do a better job in storytelling than the model they're based on ^^"

message 42: by Tiberiansun (new)

Tiberiansun Woah I've just seen the movie and I LOVED it. But the book seems so much different that I will just not bother with it.

message 43: by Yazmin (new) - added it

Yazmin Flores I feel the same. I loved the movie, hated this book. I really only finished it because I wasted my money on it by purchasing it.

message 44: by Kate (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kate Pickens ok wow this was a long review and second yes the book and movie dares are completely different. I read this book in an hour so i dont remember the small parts, but yea there were a few parts i skimmed through. Definetly see the movie tho. some parts in the book were played out a little better in the book.

Agustina Vidal Thank you!! I thought exactly the same.
The movie is great tough, at least for me, I love Emma and Dave. And I loved the fact that it was so different from the book -which I didn't like at all- and the message is better in the movie. I feel maybe it's meant for younger readers? Idk..

Lindsay Same! The book was okay, but the movie portrayed the idea the book was based on many times better. One of the few times I'll say the movie was better.

message 47: by Shandi (new)

Shandi Reid I'm one chapter in and I have to agree with you. Vee seems a little wimpy. She's freaking out bc her shirt was wet and people saw the outline of her breasts through the wet fabric. I actually picked this book up solely bc of the movie preview I saw on my Now You See Me 2 DVD (no I haven't seen the movie at all). It looked awesome. When I went to buy the book on my NOOK and saw it was being compared to The Hunger Games, I got even more excited. The Hunger Games are my all time favorite books and movies so of course I would give a book being praised for its likeness to my favorite novels. After only one chapter I can tell that this book is definitely not like The Hunger Games... Tragic indeed but I'll finish the book bc I spent the money on it.

On another note, when does the DVD hit stores??

µþ°ùó²Ô²¹²µ³ó Leonard Saw the movie twice because I loved it so much, got the book and while I enjoyed it the film was soo much better. As for the prologue it is mentioned. It's while Ian and all the others go for their seperate dares and Vee is in the room with Daniella and the other girl. They talk about a girl who wanted more fame after being on nerve so she goes to a waterfall and jumps off a cliff and is never heard of again. They say she did it for fame because who would just randomly gave a photographer there while you are going for a walk

Sarah Pierce You nailed it! Exactly what I was trying to express in my own review!
