If you're looking for accessible classics, Edith Wharton's novellas are a good place to start. Although I preferred Ethan Frome over this book, both of these novellas resonated more strongly with me than Wharton's more popular novels (The House of Mirth and The Age of Innocence).
As in "Frome", "Summer" is set in a small New England town and centers around the complex relationships of just a few main characters. For me, this is where Wharton is at the top of her game. Love is never easy or straightforward on Wharton's pages, and it rarely enters the equation when marriage is concerned.
"Summer" is a sad coming-of-age tale where young Charity Royall learns many of life's cruel lessons -- about class, about men, and about loneliness -- all too soon.

Don't be embarrassed Dana! I have hardly read any classics.. I did so enjoy Ethan Frome and I really want to read more of Wharton, but I keep getting sidetracked by these new novels :)

I also want to read more of her books... she's so good!

You might want to give this one a try! For me it wasn't quite as good, but there were similar themes.

Don't be embarrassed! I just started in on the classics this year myself after being inspired by my GR friends Julie and Candi. Wharton is a good place to start. The audio is okay (not fabulous). The books themselves are short, so you can take your pick as to which you think would be better for you. I chose audio for my walking commute :-)

Thanks, Candi. You are one of my inspirations for tackling the classics. I will add The Buccaneers. And Willa Cather is also on the docket :-)

I am glad we are spreading the classics love around GR. I was inspired by Julie and Candi :-) Ethan Frome is a great place to start.
