bookshelves: fairytale, random-grabs-from-library, read-in-2016, retelling, dnf

DNF 35% (ish) of the way in.
The story isn't bad, but I didn't realize it was Christian Fiction when I picked it up.

description

Which is totally my fault, because the library had one of those little crosses taped on the spine, and I just didn't see it. It was sitting on top of the shelf, and (while I read the back and inside) I never actually looked at the spine. So <--my fault.

description

This is (unbelievably) the 2nd time I've accidentally picked up this author, and I still wish that somewhere in the description the publishing house would see fit to sort of...I don't know...warn the reader that this stuff is more suited to a faith-based person.

description

BUT.
Even though I didn't enjoy the Bible verse stuff, this one wasn't as preachy as the other book of her's that I DNF'd. In fact, I think I could have potentially overlooked the religious theme if the story had been a bit more to my taste. As it was, I thought I was going to be reading about an ass-kicking, knife-wielding, warrior princess kind of Rapunzel, and that's not really what was in between the pages.
Still.
I think this book could work for a lot of people.

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin I have this one! We could have read it together, but I have more I'm adding. I hope you like it and I like it. I look forward to your review :-)

Anne It was just sitting there on the top of a shelf in my library...asking for me to take it home! I didn't realize it was part of a series, though.
*shrugs*
Seems to be sort of stand-aloneish...

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin Yeah, I bought it awhile back because the cover was pretty! I think it's a stand alone like you said :-)

Pfft. If I was sitting pretty on top of a library shelf, would you take me home?

message 5: by Jesse (new)

Jesse A Anything from Thomas Nelson publishers is going to be Chrsitian books. Their mainstay has been Bibles for years.

Yes. Yes, I would. But I somehow doubt you could sit on a shelf...and be pretty. ;)

It is either one or the other...

See, that is good information to know! A neighbor told me the same thing a few days ago, but I honestly had no idea. It's fine. I'm not slamming the book, I just wish I had known.

I guessing here, Bluejay, that anyone with Harley Quinn as their photo picture would make that statement drip with irony... I pray that's true.

Not nearly as cute as the 'puppy dog' look.

message 32: by Sud666 (new)

Sud666 Anne, this happened to me a few months ago when I found a book called Kings Folly-it looked really good and was put in the Fantasy section (i like the idea of the white cross on the spine- my library doesn't do that) and took it home and within a few chapters I felt a eerie scratching feeling in my brain...and then I realized what it was: "Religion!"...so I dumped the book. It wasn't good anyways.

message 33: by Anne (new) - added it

Anne I hate to be that way, but I just don't enjoy the religious stuff in my books. This one would probably be awesome if that's what I was into, but as it is... No.

Sud666 Anne wrote: "I hate to be that way, but I just don't enjoy the religious stuff in my books. This one would probably be awesome if that's what I was into, but as it is... No."

Ah I don't mind it at all..religion and I do not mix...other people can do or believe what they want but to me the quality of the stories and the characters just don't work for me...I support the right of all peoples to find and read books they like but I don't want to deal with Librarians mislabeling things and then I am forced to read Christian Fantasy or YA thinking it would be aduklt fantasy

Larissa Wow okay I didn’t even realise this book was “Christian Fiction (to the point where I didn’t even know that was an actual genre) but honestly didn’t really find the bible stuff all that bad. I thought it was there because like, it’s kind of a period piece and Christianity was more prominent in “those days so it made sense to me that they were learning to read from the bible. But it wasn’t very dominant in the overall plot so I able to enjoy it since it wasn’t so in your face. But totally understand how people don’t want to read that kind of genre.

What?
Did you mean, Too bad your spirit isn't refined enough to let you enjoy such excellent art.?
If so, we're all really sad about the state of my unrefined spirit.

Yeah, I agree with you about this one not being preachy enough to have the religious stuff overpower the book. If the plot had been different, I definitely could have finished this one. Glad you enjoyed it, Leyla!

message 48: by Rea (new)

Rea K I think that any book that gets too preachy on topics we could care less about is going to be difficult to want to finish. I have plenty of topics that are on my "don't you dare shove that down my throat" list.

message 49: by Anne (new) - added it

Anne Politics and religion are my top 2, but I think that's almost everyone. Unless of course, you're reading a book specifically because of the politics/religion angle. This one was pretty mild and I could have finished it if it had a kick-ass heroine thing. It was less that and more a story of her journey. Not my thing, but also not bad.
