It happened. That thing, the reason I have put off reading this, happened. My heart broke. And I knew it would. Sure, I had heard of Anne Frank, I knew who she was, what she did, what happened. She is a historic figure, and a tragic one certainly. But I didn't make the really personal connection until I read her words, this diary. Her words bring her to life again. What a precocious young girl, so smart, so full of life; a life with so much promise, so much hope. She thinks, even writes, very much like a young girl would today. I think that's why so many young people feel a connection with her still. It's not a great work of literature. It can be tedious at times, even repetitive. But it's an important contribution to history. It tells a story that needs to be told again and again, not forgotten. Yes, Anne's words do give her life, and they will break your heart. But more importantly they resonate across time and around the world, and I expect they always will.

Bob Thank you for your review. This book touched me deeply, but when I finished I couldn't express my thoughts with words. You're right this story needs to told and never forgotten. However, based on world events, we seem to be on the verge of a repeat.

Thank you Angela.

Sara Perfect review of this book. You can never forget while reading this that she is REAL and that the most tragic part of her tragedy is that it was unnecessary and cruel.

Thanks for your comment Bob. Yes, I agree. To see the pictures and to read about what is happening to the children, in places like Syria for example, is horrific. Some day some of them will give voice to what they experienced, and it will be as compelling as Anne Frank's story.

Cecily Very affecting, Duane. As fewer and fewer living people remember WW2, I think you're right, that it's really important to remember that Anne was a real girl, and to read her in that context.

Tracey Wonderful, heartfelt review Duane .

Gaurav A beautifully succinct review, Duane!

Bionic Jean Duane - the words of your review alone put a lump in my throat. A moving and honest tribute - thank you.

Malia Great review, Duane! I remember having read this in school, and even then, it shocked me to read the words of someone who had died when they were near my own age, under such horrible circumstances. It wasn't like Jane Austen, long gone, too of course, but not a child and not a victim. I agree and hope you are right in the hope that her words will continue to resonate with readers for a very long time to come, and that history and what she, her family and countless others suffered won't be forgotten.

Duane Parker Thanks again everyone for your positive thoughts and comments.

Slip! When I first read it, way back in 4th grade...nobody told me it was ACTUALLY HER DIARY. I mean I was in tears when I read it then.
Then 7th grade came along and our class did a semester on the book....
I was stunned when I found out it was a real diary.
I think it's impossible for people NOT to be heartbroken, especially considering it's all true.
