I had to pull this off my shelves cuz I hear it’s a movie now. This is fantastic storytelling! I have never read a book with this many grotesque and horrible characters and I loved it! Sometimes I wonder what that says about me that I love books with such horrible people 🤷🏼‍♀. Where do these authors come up with this stuff!? I have Knockemstiff to read as well and I will read everything this man writes. Now I have to see what the movie leaves out cuz I don’t think they could show all of the horror.

The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is because I could not recommend this “to everyone. Even with the fantastic storytelling, not everyone I know who’s a reader would be able to read about the characters Mr Pollock introduces us to.

PS - I also just read If The Creek Don’t Rise for my book club (also about the people of Appalachia). It’s a very good book as well but much tamer in comparison.

Jennifer Welsh I saw the film, so not sure I’ll read the book, but great review, Melanie. Those ugly characters made it a full experience for me...
