it was amazing

I know I'm fast becoming a parenting book junkie, but this book was AWESOME! I loved it. So many things about the world of status quo parenting don't work or don't look right to me, on a gut level, but I don't always know why. I just know that I see lots of obedience training and entitlement training going on, and, simultaneously, tons and tons of kids diagnosed with ADHD, etc. This book does a beautiful job of explaining that all [most] kids really need is a simpler life -- less stuff, just a few good quality toys, loads of unstructured [media-free] play time, and plenty of opportunities to connect meaningfully with their parents throughout the day. Children deserve a childhood, in other words. If the book Unconditional Parenting (by Alfie Kohn) is "how to be", then this book is a perfect compliment -- "what to do." I HIGHLY recommend this book to all parents.

Anastasia I'm interested to hear what you think of this book. Sounds like a good premise.

Anastasia Thanks for your review. I plan to read it.

Mary Mulliken it'll mostly be preaching to your [amazing] choir, and much of it was for me. i still really really liked it, and think it's an important book. the last section on "filtering out the adult world" caused a shift in my thinking. and I want to say, on record, that I don't agree with him at all about not talking much to kids about their emotions at a young age. besides that, I felt pretty aligned.
curious what you will think.

Anastasia I just read a really thought-provoking book that I wanted to recommend to you: Parenting Beyond Belief: On Raising Caring, Ethical Kids Without Religion. It gave me a lot to think about and Erik's reading it right now. I'm hoping to have a mini-conference with him this summer about ideas stemming from this book.

Mary Mulliken Interesting. I/we would like to raise Orlis (+) with lots of "religion" -- religion that's personally-derived, ritual-rich, and earth-centric. Does it cover that?? If so, I'm intrigued!!!
