really liked it

This was one of the hardest books I ever read. Not because I was empathetic to the story, cause I never experienced anything similar, but because of how the story easy told. Dylan was just any other ordinary child who favored toys and friendship. However when he takes the life of twelve students and his teacher, life for his mother began to change for the worse.

How can Dylan be so brutal that he takes the lives of others, including himself. In his defense,he had a friend who assisted him,but I digress. Honestly I don't know how I would feel if I was a relative of Dylan. Would I make excuses or blame if on a bad prank? So many pivotal scenes contained in this book, but the hardest is when Sue his mother prayed that Dylan would take his own life. As a result, she would be sympathetic to the victims.

I am at a loss of words to eloquency describe what this book did to me emotionally.

I'll leave with this,an excerpt from the book: I will have to turn what I thought I knew about myself my son and my family inside out and around watching as a boy became a monster and then a boy again.

Deanna Very good review, Michael. It really is one of those books that will leave it's mark on most people emotionally.

Michael Thank you! It really triggered my heart, hard to not to get emotional when you have scenes that have you question Dylan's motives.

Licha Do you feel the author was honest? Also, is this more of the mother's story rather than experts weighing in with their observations. As hard a topic as this must be , I do think it needs to be raw, no sugar-coating anything.

I feel the author was somewhat justifying her son behavior. She never knew he could grow up to be a monster, but she did see him change as they days of the shooting grew closer. It is primarily her story, but others weight in. It is extremely raw and has you question her son motives.

Licha I can't say I totally blame the mother for trying to explain her son's actions. As a mom you want everyone to see your child in a good light, and perhaps there's also a bit of the shame that you somehow failed as a parent. A mom would want people to see that somewhere deep down there was still a good boy, not just a monster. I can expect that there will be a bit of justifying, but as long as she's not in denial then I can accept the explaining, and would even have to question her a little if she didn't attempt to show some of the good her son had to have possessed at some point.
