I read this book before the movie was planned (at least to my knowledge), and I loved it from the beginning. It probably isn't the type of book you can read with lots of distraction around you, it requires a quiet setting where you can immerse yourself in the beautiful writing. Set in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains the story of the Civil War is told as it relates to the lives of those who live in this rural area, and the devastating effect it has on everyone. However, the story is much more about love, forgiveness and hope than just the despair of the seemingly endless days until Inman returns.

Kevin Ansbro Beautiful review, Cheri.
Your four-star rating mirrored the one I had in my mind all the way through my read, but his beautiful prose (which I found beguiling and frustrating in equal measure) won me over in the end.

Cheri Ah, Kevin, this was more of a "calgon, take me away" book for me. I was swept away from the start, such lovely prose, at times it seemed at odds with the setting and the times, but beguiling. For me, it also takes place in an area that I love, such beautiful country!

Cecily You're so right about its being immersive.

Cheri Thanks so much, Cecily, I keep meaning to change this to five stars, I can't really recall any reason why I held back from that 5th star to begin with. Loved the film, as well, but loved the book more.
