A Masterpiece!

Awesome story!! Wow! Stephen blows my mind. His prose is so easy to follow and he is so clear what he is getting across to me, the reader. It knows how to set up a character.

There are a lot of bells and whistles in this story and its draw is Lee Oswald and the shooting of JFK. Yet, this story is really a love story. King doesn't write many love stories, but at heart, this book is a love story between Jake Epping/George Amberson and Sadie Dunhill. It's a beautiful relationship the two have and the love story holds the whole book together, in my opinion.

Jake goes back in time to stop the assassination of JFK. He lives in 2011 and he finds a strange time-hole that goes to 1958 and he has to live life in the past before he can stop Lee. He moves to the Dallas area to a little town called Jodie, TX where he substitute teaches and becomes a full time staff. The librarian is Sadie Dunhill and they quickly become friends. Half of the story almost is their story and about the kids at school.

Stephen is a master a character writing. If you want to know how to write a character, then Stephen is the master to follow. He uses that to build this community of Jodie and I was so pulled in. I almost didn't care about the rest, but it's so intricately woven together that it's all one thread.

As readers, especially someone like me who didn't know a whole lot about Oswald, Stephn has done his research and he packs this books with historical facts. He plays here and there with timing and he lets us know in the afterward, but mostly, he sticks to the facts. I am amazed how much is known about the spouse abusing messed up man. King really brings the humanity to Marina, his wife and their child and he even shows the humanity of Lee at moments with his daughter. Marina put up with a horror show.

The theme of this book is 'the past harmonizes' and Stephen drives this point home to good effect. It becomes it's own harmonic in the book and it helps to bring all the stories going on together. I'm telling you, this is a layered masterpiece from one of the most gifted writers of our time. He weaves historical fact with fiction with historical fiction with time travel with a love story for the ages.

The idea of time travel is also dealt with. What happens if time is changed? What would that do to the world? Would a good intention to change the past bring about the changes we want? These are the questions explored in this book.

The time travel is unique to what I've seen and I love it. In a dinner in the town Jake lives in, there is a "rabbit hole" and this particular hole leads to 1958. Everytime you go in, it's like a reset and anything you changed before is undone and it's always the exact same time you come out in. It is a wonderful device Stephen came up with. Jake's friend hatches this plan to save JFK and Jake is the one who has to carry it out. It's fascinating and it makes you wonder if a "rabbit hole might be possible and how interesting to make that happen. It's a lovely device used in the story and all kinds of choices happen from it. You can go back and see the changes you made and then go back and tweek it.

This is now one of my Top 5 Favorite Stephen King novels. I really think it's a masterpiece and he is at the top of his game here. I wish I had read it sooner, but I got it now. Also, I got my tome in this year, barely. It also makes me wonder how many more masterpieces Stephen has in him. He seems to have one or more a decade. I guess 45 years of writing daily does pay off in a big way. I also have a harmonic resonance with Stephen and his work. I was born in 1974 and he published Carrie in 1974. I find that interesting.

I think my goal is to make 2020 a Stephen King year and I want to get caught up with his bibliography again. I will see if I can do a book a month or so. There are some big ones left to read so that might be asking too much.

Serenity Hi Calista,
Awesome review. I have never read a King novel , since I am not fond of scary/horror book. However, your review makes me want to read this book. Thank you for your review.

Angela M Fantastic review, Calista. I won’t read King’s horror stories but I read and loved this one .

Hey Scott, '74 is a great year. Great to share it with you. High-five back to you.

Matt Great review, Calista.

Libby Excellent review, Calista! Agree, King is masterful at character development.

Hey Serenity. I guess I got into horror as a teen, but mostly, I just like Stephen King. I have now outgrown horror and I no longer really enjoy it, but I still like Stephen King. He seems to use horror to explore a certain theme, but not all his books are horror, even if they are sold that way.

I have read many people say they don't read King, but they love this book. Recently, the books I'm reading of him or not horror. He has gotten into hard crime and this is historical fiction. There is violence, but this is not horror, at least not in my mind. I would go far enough to say this is a love story.

Also, see Angela M's comment. I have seen that often.

Calista Angela M wrote: "Fantastic review, Calista. I won’t read King’s horror stories but I read and loved this one ."

Angela, I have heard this often about this Stephen King book. It is a great story and this is something everyone can read. There is no horror.

Calista Angela M wrote: "Fantastic review, Calista. I won’t read King’s horror stories but I read and loved this one ."

PS. Angela, have you read Eyes of the Dragon? It's a fantasy book he wrote for his daughter. I love that book and it might be another one you enjoy. Also his 'On writing' nonfiction is a great book too.

Jeremy Great review .. just started reading

Calista Matt wrote: "Great review, Calista."

Hello Matt, Happy New Year! Thanks

Calista Libby wrote: "Excellent review, Calista! Agree, King is masterful at character development."

Hey Libby. Thank you and Happy new year. What is your favorite King novel?

I tend to like his longer stories better, but sometimes he does get a bit wordy. I still love The Stand' and that is my favorite still.

Calista Libby wrote: "Excellent review, Calista! Agree, King is masterful at character development."

PS. Do you have a novel you think is best at this character development? and Do you think that is your favorite book of his?

Don Bought this book at a 2nd hand bookstore a few months back, got a few King books beforehand to read but this looks like King at his best, hope I enjoy it as much as you did😃

Calista Jeremy wrote: "Great review .. just started reading"

Jeremy, Happy reading. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did. I love learning about that time and about Oswald, but my favorite part is the middle section with George in the middle with Sadie.

I don't have one that I think is best but The Stand is my favorite King book.

Don, 2nd hand books can be great. They have been well loved already. Best of luck with the book. I hope this book is as enjoyable for you as it was for me.

Kim Have the book on my shelves but, having watched the TV series, not sure now if I want to read it! TV series was okay but worried about being disappointed in book or knowing what's going to happen - don't know how true to the book the TV series was (if it's anything like Under the Dome, not very!).

You we look at the works of Dickens or Dumas, anyone who wrote long ago, even Shakespeare, there are always books that sort of linger that people know while the rest of their stories disappear. I think in 200 years, the Stand will be the book that people continue to read and it will make Kings name legend. Just about everybody who likes his work, has that book in their top 5 of Stephen King.

I personally think King will be like Dickens and Shakespeare and he will have more than one book to stand the test of time.

Calista Kim wrote: "Have the book on my shelves but, having watched the TV series, not sure now if I want to read it! TV series was okay but worried about being disappointed in book or knowing what's going to happen -..."

Hi Kim, I have not watched the TV series yet, so I don't know how closely it follows the book or not. I would think the answer is, do you enjoy reading King? and Do you want to read the book? If you don't really want to read it, then you are probably not going to enjoy it so much. That's just my thought. Good luck on your decision. If you do decide to read it, I hope you enjoy it more than the series.

Albert Elnen If you haven't done so check Danse Macabre. It's a book about horror movies. It's short. Well short for a King book. I've been a fan since I read the shining. This was way back in 1982.

Chasity Kim- I read the book (absolutely loved it) and then tried to watch the show. I was really disappointed with the show in comparison. The show, in my opinion, is not a great reflection of the book.

Hi Albert. I read Danse Macabre back in the 90s and it gave me a whole new perspective on horror. It's then that I started to actually watch horror and try and figure out the bigger themes they were going for. It was one of my first nonfiction books I read. It's a great work. Thanks for sharing.

Chasity. Thanks for helping out and offering feedback. I was hoping the show would be good, but maybe not. I might not even watch it. I enjoy what was in my head.

Summer (speaking_bookish) I agree, this is an absolute masterpiece!

Mark Porton Yes, a Masterpiece indeed!! Magic review - this is my only Stephen King book, I can't bring myself to read any others if his, as I think I'll only be disappointed after this one - loved it!

Summer (speaking_bookish) this is absolutely s masterpiece. One of my favorite books of all time. King's genius is on full display in this book and ironically it's really unlike most other things he's written.

Cookie M. I am not a big Stephen King fan, although I do like the fence around his Bangor, Me. house. It has little bat medallions in it.

I did enjoy reading this one, however. I like when he turns his hand more toward the science fiction end if things.

Calista Mark wrote: "Yes, a Masterpiece indeed!! Magic review - this is my only Stephen King book, I can't bring myself to read any others if his, as I think I'll only be disappointed after this one - loved it!"

I agree about this being a Masterpiece. It's my #1 King Book. But, I have to say that he has some other really good books out there. I just finished Duma Key and it was a fantastic book. I gave it another 5 stars.

Calista Summer wrote: "this is absolutely s masterpiece. One of my favorite books of all time. King's genius is on full display in this book and ironically it's really unlike most other things he's written."

Hey Summer, This is my number 1 favorite King book. It's his best work ever and it is a masterpiece. The historical research that went into this is amazing and the cool thing about this book is he has been teasing this story in other stories for decades. The Kennedy assassination was mentioned often.

Blair Definitely one of Kings best!. Accessible for everyone as well. Great review Calista.

Hey Ann-Marie, I love the fence around his house too. It's amazing. Science fiction is one genre I would say he writes the least in, but this was amazing. Thanks for your opinion.

Calista Blair wrote: "Definitely one of Kings best!. Accessible for everyone as well. Great review Calista."

Hey Blair. For me, it's his best work. I would say it is accessible to everyone. Thanks for the comment.
