it was amazing
bookshelves: 2008, childhood-reads, top-10, pulitzer-prize-winners

I first read the Reader's Digest Condensed Books version of this novel when I was in 3rd grade. Even though I didn't understand the nature of the crime in the story, it had a profound effect on they way I looked at race and justice. I also learned some very big lessons about things like gossip and judging others.

I had my daughter read it when she was in 4th or 5th grade--about 15 years ago. I re-read it at that time. It didn't have quite the same impact on me at that time, but it was still a powerful story.

I've just finished my third reading. This time, I'm amazed by the craftsmanship of the writing and how strong the voice of Scout Finch is. Through her, a whole world comes alive that I have only experienced in literature.

"To Kill a Mockingbird" deserves a place among the greatest works of American Literature.

Lisa Vegan Sandi, I've read this book over 100 times. Every time I react to it differently and get something new from it. I saw the movie with my patents when it first came to theaters. I was 9. I read the book for the first time at 11 or 12.

Sandi It is my all-time favorite book. I might have an internal battle on number 2-10 on a top ten list, but this is always, always, always my favorite book. Every other well-loved book is only "one of my favorite books".

Lisa Vegan This was my favorite the year I was 12 and has never been off my top 5.
