it was amazing
bookshelves: america-canada, poetry

Stunned.

Destroyed.

Took the wind out of my sails,

and the light out of my eyes.

Not wanting to curse but fuck me! could she write!

As for "Daddy" what heart crushing despair.

Steven Godin Feels like being lost in a dark abyss, the problem being I don't want to find my way out. It's that good.

Steven Godin If your still not feeling like your old self at the moment I wouldn't read this for the time being as it's quite heavy going.

Steven Godin Not yet but it's down to-read, probably sooner rather than later.

Dolors Totally get your stunned thoughts, Steven.
The Bell Jar might not be quite the literary treat these raw poems are, but one gets a glimpse into their making, into the lens Plath saw the world through. Cruel, in slow-motion, in deafening silence.

I do not stir.
The frost makes a flower,
The dew makes a star,
The dead bell,
The dead bell.

Somebody's done for."

There are also recurrent patterns that straddle her attempt at writing prose and her later poetry.

Steven Godin Interesting comment Dolors, thanks.

Steven Godin The worry for me not having read 'The Bell Jar' is that her poetic mind was genius, and not many can pull of writing poetry and novels in equal greatness.

Tara Hi Steven, just finished this myself, and I agree with this wholeheartedly:

“Took the wind out of my sails,

and the light out of my eyes.

My sentiments exactly. Such a powerful collection!

Yes, I don't think this collection will ever be topped, in terms of raw alarming power.

Ebba Simone So very true, Steven.

E. A. Poe said: "If a poem hasn't ripped apart your soul, you haven't experienced poetry."
