Do not read Eileen if you don't like repulsive characters, if you're turned off by graphic descriptions of bodily smells and filth, or if you like your novels to be action packed. Do read Eileen if you like dark character studies and can stand to be strung along for most of a book before getting to the crux of what is being foreshadowed. Eileen -- the narrator -- looks back at a few days in 1964 when she was 24 years, and living a nasty life in a small town with her nasty father working at a nasty job. And Eileen is not particularly nice either -- in fact she's pretty nasty and she pretty much knows it. Enough said. There's no point revealing the plot. This one is an experience rather than a story, and it will work for some and not for others. I liked reading Eileen once I got in the right head space. It's cleverly written -- it's like the layers of an onion slowly being peeled away -- underneath there's still more onion -- but I like onions -- every now and then. Despite the darkness, there's an undercurrent of humour -- dark humour. The end was weird -- but no weirder than the rest of the book, really. I'm not sure I would classify this one as Booker material, but the lists are getting odder every year, so Eileen probably fits as well on the list as other books. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for giving me access to a copy.

Yikes, LeAnne, that's just one example of the the repulsive things in this book. The author really piles it on.

Thanks Melanie. I hope you enjoy it! Be prepared for something quite odd.

Mice don't feature prominently, Dana. But there's plenty of stuff that to be squeamish about in this book. It definitely isn't for everyone.

Thanks Dana. I hope you enjoy it. Sorry to hear about your fear of mice. They certainly make me scream when I see them!

Thanks Angela. Yup, I don't think I would have recommended it to you.

Thanks Susan. Your use of the word "stink" is bang on. Looking forward to seeing what you think of this one.

Thanks Diane. I do find the Booker nominations less reliable than they used to be.

I'm not going to judge, Robin!

Thanks Jen. Definitely read a few more reviews before you decide whether to read it.

Thanks Carol. Just be forewarned that Eileen is pretty explicit about her less than stellar personal hygiene :)

Thanks, Cheri. Definitely read other reviews before you decide to read this.

Thanks Debbie. Can't wait to see how the complaints/likes balance sheet works out on this one.

Eilee is absolutely twisted, Jaidee! Enjoy :)

I'm looking forward to your review, Joanne. I hope you did get some sleep :)

Thanks Elyse. It's one of the Booker nominees. It's definitely not for everyone but you might enjoy the dark humour.

Thanks Mike. I'd be curious to know what you think once you've had a chance to read it.
