it was amazing
bookshelves: all-time-favs, read-in-german

It's hard for me to put into words how much I loved this story. The pacing, the characters, the overall plot - everything was perfection. However, the most amazing thing for me was the writing style. So much eloquence and beauty, without ever being over the top. I've seen some people complaining about how "simple" some of the heavy plot points were treated. I do understand and respect those opinions, but I especially liked that aspect.
Yes, this is a book about a murderer, but it isn't a crime novel. It's much more than that. To me, it was a wonderful exploration of a man I loved to hate and hated to love.

Thank you so much!! :)

Catherine “A man I loved to hate and hated to love is such a delightfully accurate description of my feelings towards Gremouille. I think it says a lot about Süskind’s mastery at characterisation that he made it possible for me to root for such a nefarious narrator.

Silvia Cachia I confer with you. Nothing simpleton, the simplicity is the result of his refined craft. I have read this book twice, and it's compelling. It's very philosophical, tough topic, yes, but it is a masterpiece, it reminds me of many different and great books. It has a classic quality to it.

Strawberry_22 It's not so much that it wasn't a crime novel, I just think the beginning of the novel should've had a more mature grasp of the audiences attention. The intro seemed too simple or that I had a higher expectation for prose or maybe too hyped? It all seemed like a movie I'd watch during middle school on a Halloween night. Dunno. Nonetheless, It was a pretty interesting novel but from my experience I sided with Foucault books more.
