Spoiler free review!
I am emotionally drained, I don't even know where to begin. What I do know though is this. THIS... gets 4 stars I don't know what it is about Sarah J. Maas you either love her books or you don't. It's quite clear I am all for them. I've done a lot of thinking and talking to lots of people about this book, and I've knocked it down a star. I think I had a few too many issues to give it all the stars, and I think A Court of Mist and Fury was to such a high level, this just didn't tick all of the boxes for me.
I thankfully had Warda and Fathima to buddy read with, and the support from Romie! Just want to say thank you for putting up with me going on and on!

Anyway moving swiftly on... I have so much to say! This book had everything for me. It had the moments you wish would happen to you, the heartbreak, the real moments between the friends, ups and downs. Literally everything.
"I love myself enough to not want to settle until I find that person too" - Mor
What I loved so much about this series was that it had a lot of strong female characters, there were times when I was just screaming at my book saying yes over and over! One of my favourite chapters were when the women were all in agreement and rose together. It's just refreshing to see that women are on par to men.
I honestly can't even begin to explain how much these characters have grown through the best and worst times. You've seen them at the lowest and see them pick themselves up bit by bit. I think what is so engrossing is how you can see that the characters are not perfect, however they all come together to support one another.
The other thing that I liked about the characters is that they were so diverse and all had different strengths/weakness's and abilities. Whether that is through brute force, words or even how lovely they are.
Before I gush anymore I'm going to move swiftly on to "Our family - Our Court. The Court of Dreams"
How much has Feyre developed as a character? I honestly cannot begin to explain how wonderful it was to see her progress from the start of the series until now. We see her as a broken person, but her character goes from strength to strength. In times throughout this book we get glimpses into A Court of Mist and Fury and what she once suffered. However this time round, we see her battle her demons, and open up to Rhys about them. "I feel... heavy again" I loved her relationship with her sisters in this book, and there were some touching moments. I think what made me love her character as much this time round is the fact that she had grown as a character and knew how to deal with things in certain situations. I think that Rhys had taught her well to wear certain masks and if you're going to do something bide your time. Them first few chapters was fire!
Where to even begin with Rhys... the things he does for his court. Oh my heart. I just can't or don't even know where to begin. He's so fierce when it comes to his family, his court and his people. "How can you ask me not to give everything I have to ensure you, that my family and people survive?" What I loved this time round was that we got an open and honest version of Rhys. I love how he makes it quite clear to Feyre he does not control her, she can do what she likes as long as she talks to him first.
"My gift is truth - and yet I have been living a lie my entire existence"
I felt so, so, so sorry for Mor. I think out of a lot of peoples back stories in this series, Mor is one that is so painful. This time round we got revelations about her, I honestly didn't expect it, because of this you understand her so much more. I love how fiercely loyal she is, and how her friendships are so strong within her court and other courts. I think her story could of been told better.
The odd little one Amren. I still want to know so much more about her. She is undeniably a bad ass of a character. I like how she speaks to the rest of her friends, I know it's slightly undermining, but she reminds me of a cranky old grandma. Some things she does is questionable, however that is the price she has to pay. I want to know more about her a Varian please!
Chain me to a tree, Rhys, go ahead. I'll rip it out of the ground and fly with it on my damned back"
Azriel is just. He's such a wonderful character. When I think of Azriel I think of darkness, but there's so much more to him than that. His gentleness with Elain was such a kind and beautiful thing. I really liked the friendship between the two was so unexpected, but it honestly such a nice surprise. He was there for her, and never pushed her. I just want him to find happiness so much! Hi did something so sweet for her, I was weak!
So, did anyone else fall slightly in love with Cassian? I don't know what happened, but his character in this book was undeniably amazing. I love how protective he is, and how he keeps hinting and trying to persuade Nesta to train. His whole relationship with Nesta in this book gave me life. The constant bickering, backwards and forwards. The sly glances at one another, how he defended her and tried to get through to her. It was glorious.
"Only Nesta would not just conquer Death, but pillage it" - Rhys
Honestly, I absolutely adore Nesta I think what made her so special this time around was how well she adapted. I'd loved her in both of the previous books, for multiple reasons, and I was skeptical to see what she would be like and if the cauldron had changed her. I mean I'm still not over that point. I'm glad it got a mention a few times because what can I say, that was one of my favourite parts of ACOMAF. I think we've always needed more of Nesta in this series, someone who is unrelenting and sticks to her grounds and has all os the sass. I know she's not the most likeable character, but maybe that's why I have a soft spot for her. HER AND CASSIAN. I NEED MORE! Nesta is my queen!
In previous books I never really warmed to Elain however this time round I found myself liking her more and more. To begin with I felt so sorry for her it actually was painful to read her go into herself so much and to suffer like she did. However her overcoming everything was just so heart warming, and refreshing to see how she overcame her own personal barriers and hurt.
Can I just tell you how long I have wanted more of Lucien we FINALLY got it! He was everything I wanted and more! All of the little things he did, his patience with Elain, and what he actually thinks is so heartbreaking. He is kind, loving and has all sass! The things he does even when he knows it will break him and does it anyway. Oh, I just love him.
Tamlin YOU HAVE DONE IT! I no longer hate you. "I wish you happiness"
"We deserve to be happy, and I will fight with everything I have to ensure it." - Rhys
"We will fight. Not just you - not anymore." - Feyre
What I liked?
- Even though Feyre isn't on the best of terms returning to Spring Court, I really liked how she protected Tamlin and Lucien, I know it's something so small, but I honestly really really enjoyed this!
- I say this every time but the friendships are always something I love about this series. We had Feyre building friendships in the Spring Court, Nesta and Armen, Elain and Azriel. There was something sweet and genuine about all of these. I kind of wish we found out more about Alis!
- Cassian and Azriel, you guys know! I SCREAMED!
- Okay, in some really serious situations, there were some really, really amusing parts. Two stand out for me... when Cassian has such a go at Feyre for not telling them she was a High Lady. The second. Oh my, I'm just going to leave you this from Feyre darling "I kept my litany of praying, beseeching the cauldron to make my womb fruitful, on and on-" - Feyre
- We got to see so much more of the other courts, the Winter Court brought foxes in little coats! I dieeeeeeed!
- Azriels compliments to Feyre because she's an artist swoon. Not only this, but just how patient and that he rooted for her when they trained together.
- Nephelles story, another strong female!
- Tarquin returned to me! Out of the high lords, I have such a soft spot for him it's beyond ridiculous!
- I loved the meeting, literally it was just so good! I couldn't believe how well played out everything was.
- Maybe... I have a slight soft spot for Eris. I'm intrigued okay!
- My feelings towards the Suriel and Bone Carver, I was actually excited to see them, and I never knew how much I liked and cared for them.
- The sisters sharing the bed, and all the glimpses we had back to their "mortal" life.
- That final battle, my god my heart was in my mouth the entire time. I'm pretty sure I stopped breathing for a full chapter.
- Lucien and Cassian were literally just unbelievable in this book. Ridiculously swoony swoon.
What I didn't like?
- It kind of rattled me how many times the word mate was used, it got a little bit boring after hearing it for the 100th time.
- How it played with my emotions and made me love characters I didn't even know I liked!
- Some representations, well they didn't go down very well...
- I think the ending was a bit of a cop out, you'll see what I mean once you read it.
Seriously how do I even conclude this? I don't want this series to end, it can't leave me like this for another year, and even then I don't know where it's going. I'm so happy that I took my time to read this, and I'm pretty sure I will be re-reading this soon. For now my heart need a break. I am broken.
"I see all of you, Rhys. And there is not one part that I do not love with everything that I am
Same Feyre, same...
Audiobook thoughts
I still love this series, BUT I'm still miffed about the lack of casualties, this time around Feyre annoyed me slighlty more because I just felt that she had this aura about her that came across as entitled. The Mor situation still pisses me off.
HOWEVER I still ship Nessian, Nesta is my Queen and I was holding back tears at work in regards to the ships!
I can't wait for A Court of Frost and Starlight, I need more Nessian in my life!
A Court of Thorns and Roses - 4 Stars
A Court of Mist and Fury - 5 Stars
A Court of Wings and Ruin - 4 Stars
A Court of Frost and Starlight - 3.5 Stars
A Court of Silver Flames - 2 Stars

I initially did give it 5 stars, but I think that I had a few issues with it that I either didn't agree with and sometimes I was a bit like ey?! I clearly did really enjoy it, but maybe not as much as what I hoped. Especially after how good ACOMAF was :)

Great and in depth review Beth!!😂
Haha well i did ask Warda as she has listened to it and unfortunately there are no extra.....sound effects hahahaha!!😂😂
