did not like it

Update: I never did get around to writing a proper review, but still consider this to be the absolute worst book I’ve ever read in my life—and yes, I read Fifty Shades of Grey. I think this review written by Mary Gaitskill sums it up perfectly:

***

Review to come.. But at the moment, I'm so relieved to be done with this boring, cheesy, cliched book of transgressive chick lit. I'm not eager to talk about it.

0.96% "YES.. I'm finally reading it! I know, I know.. Last person on the planet to read it. And how fitting... My fifth year anniversary with my husband is coming up, haha. We saw this movie together, so I'm gonna be picturing Ben Affleck who I hate. Poor Nick. He doesn't stand a chance of winning me over as a narrator."

20.48% "I really thought that Amy was gonna be more interesting than this, a clever villain. She's just a typical weak girl, obsessed with getting/keeping a husband. She's pathetic and dull."

page 123
29.64% "Amy is in her 30's throughout the entire book, yet constantly refers to people as "snobdouche" and "dickweasel" and things of that nature. Just a whiny, immature, privileged, basic bitch with no personality or hobbies outside of obsessing over Nick. Rosamond Pike really elevated her in the movie. The book sucks."

31.33% "Gillian Flynn is really being a cunt in her stereotypical characterizations of Midwestern natives."
October 7, 2016 –
page 144
34.7% "Absolutely none of these characters are even slightly believable. And you wonder why Nick didn't leave Amy, since he hated her so much, but all the women who hit on him & even his mistress are obnoxious idiots. This author was determined to never portray any woman favorably."

page 168
40.48% "Nick says about a 64-year-old woman, "I could smell her, though, a female scent, vaginal and strangely lewd."

WTF does that even mean? Like menstrual blood? Or like she just had sex? What is this author even talking about?"
October 7, 2016 –

40.48% "Because a senior citizen surely smells like a dripping wet vagina."

50.36% "The lawyer's name is Tanner Bolt, and he's wearing a lime green tie... Can no one, not even one measly minor character, be believable?"

page 219
52.77% ""I really did that, I didn't just write that I did. (Don't fret, we'll sort this out: the true and the not true and the might as well be true.)" - Amy. Who the fuck is she talking to? Is she writing a memoir to contradict her diary and rat herself out? WTF?"
October 7, 2016 –
page 220
53.01% "Honestly, Amy, I don't care what's true and what's not (although I already know, because I saw the movie). "Diary" you and "real" you are one in the same, just exceedingly dull WASPs who can't live without a man."
October 7, 2016 –

53.49% ""I was pretending, the way I often did, pretending to have a personality." - No kidding, girl. But even your fake personality is boring as shit."

58.8% "Wow, at least Tits McGee (..oops, I mean Andie) stuck up for herself. That's more than I can say for dumbass, spineless, passive aggressive Amy."
October 9, 2016 –
page 360
86.75% "Ok. I see what the author is doing here, and I like it. She's comparing/contrasting Desi and Nick. Desi is and does everything Amy wanted from Nick, but now she's finally seeing that's not such a good thing. Desi is a "careful what you wish for, you might get it.""
October 9, 2016 –

95.66% "And this is the point where Nick's character becomes a completely unbelievable female fantasy. The author really fucked it up... Him asking himself what he'd be without Amy. El Oh El."
