it was amazing

(4.5) Here I am, a bit to my surprise...

I've been trying to read a lot of "older classic Adult Fantasy" books and it's been hit and miss.
I'm tired of being hit with description of boobs and nipples every time a female character is introduced and this was (sadly) refreshingly not like that. The bar is loooow.

The characters are likeable, the word building is intriguing, the magic system is interesting... It does contain some classic tropes like the farmer boy/chosen one but it didn't bother me and I'm totally planning on continuing!

The weaknesses:
- the "romances" they don't take much space in the book (thankfully!) but they're not very good. (view spoiler)
- The ending was pretty vague but it is the first book in a 14 book series.

If you weren't sure about it, I say pick it up! In time for the new tv series!

Maybe I can keep it for next year big book challenge!

Adrian Reinstein I say, read ASAP! This series is AMAZING! And really a MUST for ANYONE who enjoys fantasy... It's on the same par as Tolkien... But takes the tropes we all know and love, and does them better than anyone else can or has! Sanderson finished the series and learned many lessons in doing so... If that gives you any clue.

This is more like 14 months big book challenge aka WoT challenge.
The books are great but very heavy. Many info dumps, a lot of characters etc. It's truly a commitment.

Faranae You are going to be flooded with gushing adorers of this series. I hated it (and I like Tolkein, so take comparisons to him with a grain of salt). So if you end up hating it, know that you will not be alone in your unpopular opinion.

Mirareru No Don't expect too much! Few first books in this series were ok. The first one was your typical Tolkien-style fantasy, I liked second and third the most, but it all went downhills from there. Characters, especially female ones, were annoying as hell, and books didn't deliver what they promised. I didn't make it to Sanderson's ending though, I read only 5 or 6 books. Hope you would like it more than I did!

Nikolay Georgiev Tv show is coming?

Oh I'm definitely planning on going one book at a time lol
Not sure I'll read all 14!

There's a reason I haven't read it yet... scared I won't love it tbh!

Yup it's been announced but no dates yet!

Cassian Lynne I liked the first one moderately well (it definitely was hard to go from Stormlight #3 to WoT #1... The former is a masterpiece and the latter is a decent fantasy) but the second one is much better so far!! So for me personally, I’d recommend going on to book 2 before deciding about continuing the series as a whole. But I know that’s just my personal opinion! Excited to hear what you think of this one!

Mahima Begum These books are wayyyy too big for me to read!

Edwin Pine Really liked the first one, loved the second!

Chick Bookstop GOOD LUCK TO YOU! I can't wait to hear what you think. I currently just finished book 4.

message 15: by LC (new)

LC Wait what?!? A show?? Damnit now I have to read it soon too! I tried to start it but it’s written so old school fantasy-y and i just didn’t have the oomff to keep going. Can we do a massive buddy read?

Vicki I read this in high school and found it to be overly bloated/long winded. It bored me to tears, and I like other with fantasy like Tolkien... So I agree with taking comparisons with a grain of salt. In fact, I like Brandon Sanderson so much better that I wonder if the later books blow the originals out of the water...

Kenzie Gallaher This is the reason I got into fantasy. I hope you enjoy it. Brandon Sanderson finished it beautifully

Ivana Great series, I started it once, read through book 4, but when the last book was translated in my firs language, I read it again from the beginning. It took me about 5 months, but I don't regret anything :D some characters, they are unforgettable, for me especially the women. It slows a bit by the book 8, but at he end, Sanderson did a great job, as with all his books, and for me, it was a great pleasure. I really hope you like it

♥ Rebecca ♥ Since everyone is giving you their two cents I guess I will too. 😂 I love this series! I read all 15 books counting the prequel, which I read first, back-to-back. It took me 1.5 years. I think the series starts to really find its stride with book 5. And I love the women! They are all strong, stubborn, opinionated. There are no soft women in this series. Yes, some of them are annoying 😒(Aviendha, Elayne) but others completely own me! (Nyneave 💘, Egwene, Suan, Moiraine, Min, Fiale...) Oh, and I don’t like Sanderson or Tolkien. 🤣🙈

Glad you love the women too! 😝

Kelley Stanfield Good luck! The narrators for the audio books are great.

message 22: by Ana (new)

Ana Sifuentes Did you ever end up reading this? 👀

Angel Jr I hope you like it!.. enough to continue the series at least lol

Brittany Good luck! I’m 50 pages in

Monika Wachowska At first I got to part five. A few years later, I managed to read the whole thing. Great story, but I didn't like any of the characters. The whole time I had in mind: talk to each other!

Saskia it didn't live up to the hype for me, but I hope it does for you

Amanda (Smitten For Fiction) I re-read this recently and still give it 5 stars :)

Mansi Yasssss!!! You are in for the ride of your life!!

Steffi Oh, I wish you lots of fun with this one. I can't wait to hear your opinion on it.

Rafael Just keep in mind its 30 years old and follows a more classical path of the Hero's Journey.

Presley the first one is AMAZING SO GOOD..i even read it twice! then it kinda gets convoluted and drags on... ive been in the middle of the 4th book for ages..

Laura D. Molina M. I can’t wait to hear your opinion on this one!

message 33: by Erik (new)

Erik DNF on this one. Actually, you can judge a book by its cover 😉 (come on, those covers are the worst)

callista crow I read first seven books when I was 14 y.o and was obsessed with them but unfortunately my local library didn't have the rest of the books, so I never finished the series. I hope to start reading it again this year.

message 35: by Toby (new) - rated it 5 stars

Toby Spackman I felt it was a bit of a slow burn, with a lot to take in. Very "lord of the rings"ish, but I loved it. How do you feel about it so far?

message 36: by Lucinda (new) - added it

Lucinda OOOOOO MAYBE I SHOULD START READING THIS NOW!! Been meaning to do it for ages 😂

Rifat Tasnia I will start reading it after your review. 😅

message 38: by Literarim (new) - added it

Literarim This is definitely my sign to start the book! 😅

message 39: by Diane (new)

Diane This series lost me at book 6? Book 7? Somewhere in "the slog" as I've heard it called. The worst part for me were the interactions between men and women- it seemed the dialogue was ripped right out of a middle school. It made everyone irritating. Hope you like it more than I did!

message 40: by Smit (new) - rated it 4 stars

Smit I totally agree with you that the ending was vague and abrupt. But it is still a decent book.

message 41: by Jo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jo Are you going to read book 2 and new spring, before watching the show? Somebody told me on a book group you need to read 0 to 2 for the show... not sure how true that is though... I'm still on book one.

Emily (Books with Emily Fox on Youtube) Kylie wrote: "Are you going to read book 2 and new spring, before watching the show? Somebody told me on a book group you need to read 0 to 2 for the show... not sure how true that is though... I'm still on book..."

I'm going to try and read book 2 but we'll see!

message 43: by KT (new) - rated it 3 stars

KT No boobs is refreshing but there will be plenty of other problematic stuff in the portrayal of women, sadly. Tell me in a few books how you feel about women tugging their braids and smoothing their skirts. (And can’t wait to see what you think about the romantic relationships to come)

Emily (Books with Emily Fox on Youtube) KT wrote: "No boobs is refreshing but there will be plenty of other problematic stuff in the portrayal of women, sadly. Tell me in a few books how you feel about women tugging their braids and smoothing their..."

Oh no... well I guess I'll be prepared now :/

Ҳ1981⁷ I am also getting through older Fantasy books and also can't stand the amount of boobs and nipples descriptions everytime a female character is in the scene. It's been awful. But nice to know I wont have to worry about that when I get to The wheel of time.

Jeffrey I took this series on last year. It's great but the "men are ..." and "women are ..." gets really old.

Jason Scott The never-ending PG-13 romances in this series really suck when you try re-reading as an adult.

Jeffrey Jason wrote: "The never-ending PG-13 romances in this series really suck when you try re-reading as an adult."

- 100% agree

message 49: by Kon (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kon R. The Magicians comes to mind when you mention boob placement, but it's a much newer book.

message 50: by Cbuck (new)

Cbuck What do you want to bet that the film version on Prime betting the Prime series will add the boobs?
