EILEEN

About 3.5 Stars!
This is supposed to be a thriller, but I didn't particularly feel chilled at any time while reading this. If anything I was a bit grossed out at some of the squalor and habits that Eileen had. She narrates so I guess this is told in the first person by Eileen. It was kind of slow for my expectations of it being a scary reading experience. Perhaps my expectations were too high based upon all the hype that this novel has been given in the past.
Eileen still lives at home with her alcoholic father and she works at a younger male prison. She fantasizes about one of the prison guards' named Randy often driving by his house. She refers to the area that she lives called Xville, so I was never really sure where this took place.
Everything changes for Eileen when a new employee named Rebecca begins working at this detention site. Rebecca is admired by Eileen and when Rebecca suggests to Eileen that they go out for drinks, Eileen is thrilled that Rebecca is showing her some interest. Eileen up until this part has led a pretty boring life. What happens after the two become friends is where my interest starts to get piqued.
This doesn't happen for quite some time and honestly I couldn't understand that this is supposed to be suspense driven, because I was underwhelmed for much of it. What Rebecca does enlisting Eileen's help is where I started to find things to start to get interesting. To find out what the two of them do, you will have to read for yourself. No spoilers here. Maybe I was tired when I read this and that could be the reason why I didn't enjoy this as much as others. This just didn't live up to my expectations which were higher than what my reading experience was.
