The first half was so slow, and I was even thinking about DNFing which was horrifying to me, this is Neil Gaiman's book we're talking about! Plus I also found it was too easy to guess who the bad guys really were. These two things were the main drawbacks to the book for me.

But this book has some of the best characters ever. Mr Croup and Mr Vandemar are just the best partners in crime ever! I just need a book on the two of them. And Marquis de Carabas was another great character. Fantastic, fantastic.
However, I did not care much for Door or Richard. Not one single bit and since they were the main characters that seem a bit problematic, right?

鈥淚 already killed you once today, what does it take to teach some people?鈥

鈥淪ir. Might I with due respect remind you that Mister Vandemar and myself burned down the City of Troy? We brought the Black Plague to Flanders. We have assassinated a dozen kings, five popes, half a hundred heroes and two accredited gods. Our last commission before this was the torturing to death of an entire monastery in sixteenth-century Tuscany. We are utterly professional.鈥

But I pushed myself through the book, and thankfully, mostly because of the great side characters, I managed to enjoy the story.

Tani I was bored to death by this one. Starting was good. Ending was meh.

Angeli Sorry you didn't enjoy it more. This was the book that introduce me to Neil Gaiman and I totally fell in love with him. I listened to it on audiobook, read by the author, and it was amazing. His style is definitely slower but the characters, as you have found, are so interesting.

Actually, I was the opposite, I did not like the beginning. The rest was okayish because I got the great side characters to focus on. But yeah, I expected more.

My first one was the Ocean one I believe and then I got super into his Sandman series. 馃槏
And yes, he's usually on the slower style when it comes to the story. But he can write some of the best characters...but usually, I love the side characters and I'm a bit meh on the main ones. 馃し鈥嶁檧锔
